This is, of [N] course, the distinctive sounds of the picking to Joan Baez's tune Diamonds
and Rust that had a really, really cool finger picking pattern.
Very simple, but again, unique in that it has three bass notes played in every measure.
So if you want to start working on this, play an E minor chord and there are eight notes
picked out in each pattern.
You hit the first one with your thumb, the second one with your index finger, and the
third one as a pair of notes with your middle and ring fingers, where your thumb plays one
of the three bass strings, your index finger plays the third string, and then your middle
two fingers play the first and [Em] second strings.
That's set of three notes, thumb, index, middle, and ring.
Then the same pattern, but now the bass note changes to the fifth string.
Then two more.
Thumb goes to the fourth string and one finger.
So it's eight notes, a set of three, another set of three starting with the fifth string,
and now a set of two starting with the fourth string, and every one of those thumbs was
followed by your index finger.
That's the first measure.
In the second measure, [E] you slide your third finger up to the fourth fret of the [F#] fourth
string [Em] and use that as the first bass note, then slide it back to the second fret, use
it as the bass note, and then the fifth string in the [G] bass.
So, [E] the bass was six, five, four, then moving the [F#m] fourth string up to the fourth fret, and
then [E] back to the second fret, [B] and then back to the fifth [Em] string.
So I put [G] together a complete lesson on Diamonds and Rust at Totally Guitars as part of the
Target program, and we go into all kinds of little variations [Em] on that.
[F] Little double time sixteenth note thing that happens in there, go through all of the chords,
talk about how she played it originally at the [G#] first fret, but now when she plays it
live, it's usually done without a [G] capo, [G#m] and talk about all the picking that happens [Bm] in the bridge.
[Am] [N] So, some great little things to learn for anybody that's interested in finger picking.
We also have a lot of free lessons, of course, at Totally Guitars, and they're also all [G] here
at YouTube [G#m] at our TG Free Lessons channel.
[G]
So that's a great place to get started as well, but now there's a complete lesson, [F#] again,
in the Target program at Totally Guitars on [F] Diamonds and Rust.
So if you're interested in the tune, or any of the other hundreds that we have there,
come check us out.
