Hey, this is Paul from Guitar World, and I'm on location different from our normal Guitar World set to bring to you these brand new DiMarzio
36th anniversary PAF pickups.
Now, I have them loaded into my personal guitar, and we also have the opportunity to hear an original
1959 Gibson Les Paul with all original pickups owned by Larry DiMarzio, so we can compare and contrast
the new pickups as opposed to the original pickups.
The other thing, too, is that these brand new DiMarzio
pickups are Larry's new venture into vintage style pickups, so let's take a closer look.
Let me just say that we just strung both guitars with nine gauge strings,
and we close mic them in the same position so you can really hear the difference of both guitars.
In order to properly evaluate these brand new pickups,
we need to hear the guitars acoustically because the pickups react in many ways to the way the guitar sounds.
So I will start with my guitar, which is a 2002 Gibson Les Paul
1959 Historic, and then of course you're going to hear the original 1959 Les Paul.
So let's start hearing this one acoustically.

So as you just heard, the original Gibson 1959 Les Paul is
noticeably louder acoustically as opposed to our Historic here, which is much lower in volume.
The big difference between both these guitars besides volume is both sustain and tone.
Now, of course,
the original 1959 has more sustain and the sound is woodier,
but you have to keep in mind that you have 50 years of aging in both the wood and
electronics of this guitar, which contributes to that.
Now on the reissue
1959, the sound is a bit brighter and snappier.
Now, of course,
we'll have to come back and check that out 50 years from now to see if it ages well.
Okay, so now let's hear what an original 1959 sounds like.
I'm plugged straight into a Vox AC-15
hand-wired head and cabinet with the DiMarzio Steve Vai cable here, and I'll let you hear both the
bridge and neck pickup and both pickups, and you'll get to hear why
this original 1959 is considered the holy grail of guitars.
So let's take a [G] listen.

After hearing them, you will agree they are in the ballpark of sounding like an authentic PAF humbucker.
To say that they are just mirror productions is selling them short.
They just sound [D] right.
