Hello, it's me, the ukulele teacher, here to teach you how to play Dream A Little Dream of Me.
So, grab your uke, make [C] sure it's in tune, [Am] [E] and get ready to play a jazz classic.
Now, like a load of great jazz [B] songs, this one feels like it's got hundreds of chords in it,
and will take forever to learn.
But stick with me, and I'm going to show you a few tips and cheats
to help you remember the new chords.
The first thing I'm going to do is show you the chords for the verse.
The main chord you'll need is, of course, the chord of C, which you probably already know,
but just in case you don't, just put your third finger on the third fret of the first string,
and C should [C] sound like this.
After C is the chord of [F]
B7.
To play B7, bar the second fret with your first finger,
and put your second finger on the third fret of the third string, and B7 should sound like [B] this.
[Db] Now, later on in the song, after B7, you'll also need the chords of [Gm] Bb7 and A7.
Now, although it might sound complicated, these are actually very easy chords to learn,
because once you've got B7, Bb7, just slide down one fret, Bb7 will sound like this,
[Eb] and A7, slide down one more fret, i.e. you lift up the bar and slide your second finger down
one more fret, and A7 will sound [A] like this.
[Bm] So, from just learning the chord of [E] B7, we've also got two more chords, Bb7 and A7.
Now, the next chord you're going to need is the chord of G.
To play G, put your first finger on the second fret of the third string,
your second finger on the second fret of the first string,
and your third finger on the third fret of the second string, and G will [G] sound like this.
Now, another chord you'll need in the verse is the chord of Ab.
Well, once you've got the G shape down, all you need for Ab is to just [Ab] push it up one fret,
like this, and make sure you don't play the fourth string.
So, Ab will sound like this.
So, again, from just learning the chord of G, we've also learned another chord,
Ab, just slide it up one [N] fret.
Also, in the verse, we'll need the chords of F and F minor.
To play F, put your first finger on the first fret of the second string,
and your second finger on the second fret of the fourth string, and F should [F] sound like this.
For F minor, put your first finger on the first fret of the fourth string,
your second finger on the first fret of the first string,
and [Fm] your fourth finger on the third fret of the first string, and F minor should sound like this.
And the [Ab] final chord we'll need in the [D] verse is the chord of E7.
Put your first finger on the first fret of the fourth string,
your second finger on the second fret of the third string,
[E] and your third finger on the second fret of the first string, and E7 should sound like this.
[N] There's also three additional chords you'll need in the chorus,
and I'll take you to them when we get to it.
Before we start with the verse, I'm going to show you the strumming pattern that I personally play on this song.
But I want you to remember that it's a jazz song,
and you can have some fun with it or play the strumming pattern that you think is best.
But here is an easy strumming pattern that I think you might enjoy.
Down, down, down, up, down, up, down, down, down, [C] up, down, up, down, down, down, up, down, up, down, down, down, up, down, up.
Now generally for the verse, [Ab] the chords change halfway through the strumming pattern.
So you'll play half the pattern down, down on one chord,
and then change the chord for the down, [Em] up, down, up part.
But that will change a [N] little bit, so let me show you as we go along.
The first line is C, B7, Ab, [C] G.
Down, [B] down, down, up, down, [Ab] up, down, [G] down, down, up, down, up.
Notice I [N] change the chords halfway through that strumming pattern.
In the second line, the chords change a little bit quicker.
They are C, B7, Bb7, A7.
And remember that trick we learned from the B7 to the Bb7 to the A7.
You can just slide your finger down one fret at a time for each chord.
For the B7 to Bb7, the chords change even quicker on the down, up, down, up.
But then you play a full down, down, down, up, down, up on the A7.
Let me [C] show you that second line.
[A]
Then the third [B] line is F and F minor,
and you play a full [G] down, down, down, up, down, [F] up on each of those like this.
[Fm]
[Eb] Then the [E] last line of verse one is C, Ab, G.
And the chords change place at a slightly different [C] time again in this line.
[Ab] [G] So let's play the whole [C] of verse one.
[B] Stars shining [Ab] bright above you,
[C] night [Bb] breezes [A] seem to whisper I love [F] you.
Birds [C] singing in the sycamore tree, [Ab] dream a little [G] dream of me.
[A] Now after verse one, you go straight into verse two,
which is exactly the same as verse one except [Ab] for the last line.
The chords are C, Ab, G, C, E7.
And because the chords change quickly,
you just play one downstroke on the Ab and G.
So the last line does sound a little bit different.
Dream [Ab] a little [G] dream [C] of me.
[E]
[B] Say nighty night and kiss me.
[C] Just [Bb] hold [A] me tight and tell me you'll miss [F] me.
While I'm alone [Fm] and blue as can be, [C] dream a little dream of me.
[E]
And from verse two, we go straight into [G] the middle eight,
which has a couple of [G] new chords.
The first [N] chord you'll need is the chord of A.
To play A, put your first finger on the first fret of the third string
and your second finger on the second fret of the fourth string.
And A should sound [A] like this.
The next chord you'll need is the chord of F sharp minor.
Now that sounds like a mouthful,
but in fact, all you have to do from the chord of A
is add your third finger to the second fret of the second string.
And F sharp minor will sound like [Gbm] this.
The other new chord you'll [F] need is the chord of B minor.
Now B minor, you bar the second fret like you would for a B7,
but this time add your third finger [Bm] to the fourth fret of the fourth string.
And B minor should sound like this.
Now the good thing about the middle eight is it's just four [N] lines long
and the first three lines are all exactly the same.
They are A, F sharp minor, B minor, E7.
And each line sounds like [A] this.
[Gbm] [Bm] [E] You play that three times.
And then the last line of the middle [Bb] eight is A, A flat, [A] G.
[Ab] [G]
So let me play that middle [A] eight for you.
[Gbm] [E]
[A] [Gbm] [Bm] [E]
[Bm] [A]
[Ab] [G] Then you move on to verse three, which is [C] exactly the same as verse two.
[B]
[Ab] [C] [A]
[F]
[C] [Ab] [C] [E] Then you repeat the middle [N] eight and verse three to end the song.
And that's how to play Dream a Little Dream of Me.

To play G, put your first finger on the second fret of the third string,

Well, once you've got the G shape down, all you need for Ab is to just [Ab] push it up one fret,

_ So, again, from just learning the chord of G, we've also learned another chord,

_ [N] There's also three additional chords you'll need in the chorus,

The first line is C, B7, Ab, [C] G.
Down, [B] down, down, up, down, [Ab] up, down, [G] down, down, up, down, up.
Notice I [N] change the chords halfway through that strumming pattern.

_ _ _ [Fm] _
_ _ [Eb] Then the [E] last line of verse one is C, Ab, G.
And the chords change place at a slightly different [C] time again in this line. _ _
[Ab] _ _ [G] _ _ _ _ So let's play the whole [C] of verse one.
[B] Stars shining [Ab] bright above you,
[C] _ night [Bb] breezes [A] seem to whisper I love [F] you.
Birds [C] singing in the sycamore tree, [Ab] dream a little [G] dream of me.
_ [A] Now after verse one, you go straight into verse two,
which is exactly the same as verse one except [Ab] for the last line.
The chords are C, Ab, G, C, E7.
And because the chords change quickly,
you just play one downstroke on the Ab and G.
So the last line does sound a little bit different.
Dream [Ab] a little [G] dream [C] of me.
[E] _
_ _ _ [B] Say nighty night and kiss me.
[C] _ Just [Bb] hold [A] me tight and tell me you'll miss [F] me.
While I'm alone [Fm] and blue as can be, [C] dream a little dream of me.
_ [E] _ _ _
And from verse two, we go straight into [G] the middle eight,
which has a couple of [G] new chords.
The first [N] chord you'll need is the chord of A.
To play A, put your first finger on the first fret of the third string
and your second finger on the second fret of the fourth string.
And A should sound [A] like this.
_ The next chord you'll need is the chord of F sharp minor.

And each line sounds like [A] this. _
[Gbm] _ _ [Bm] _ _ [E] _ _ You play that three times.
And then the last line of the middle [Bb] eight is A, A flat, [A] G.
_ _ _ [Ab] _ _ [G] _ _
So let me play that middle [A] eight for you.
[Gbm] _ _ _ [E] _
_ [A] _ _ [Gbm] _ [Bm] _ _ _ [E] _
_ _ _ [Bm] _ _ _ _ [A] _
_ _ _ [Ab] _ [G] _ _ Then you move on to verse three, which is [C] exactly the same as verse two.
_ [B] _ _
[Ab] _ _ _ [C] _ _ _ _ [A] _
_ _ [F] _ _ _ _ _ _
[C] _ _ _ [Ab] _ [C] _ _ [E] Then you repeat the middle [N] eight and verse three to end the song.
And that's how to play Dream a Little Dream of Me.
