8 [Em] miles high, [D]
and when you [C] touch down, [G]
you'll find [D] that it's stranger [C] than you thought.
And those [Em]
signs in the street [D]
that say [C] where you're going [G]

Well, [B] that was [Bb] the opening to a lesson [A] I put together at Totally Guitars on 8 [Am] Miles High.
Looking at the [G] Byrds version, not Leo Kocky's version, of this classic psychedelic song
from the 60s.
[B] Now, in this lesson, [Abm] we talk about chord [E] progressions, how to play a really simple, kind of [C] cool
progression that happens [A] in there.
We talk about the Dorian mode, [D]
and to play the opening lead [A] [G]
[D] [E] [Eb] with all kinds of little
things in there.
A little Phrygian mode talked in there.
[Ebm] So I like to have students work on this song for a few reasons, but one of them is to [Db] experiment
with the sound that Roger McGuinn got, kind of trying to sound a little bit like John
Coltrane, [Bb] a little bit like Ravi Shankar [Ab] creating a [A] raga rock, [Ab] almost, that [B] happens by just
messing around with [E] notes in the E [Ab] [G] Dorian scale [Eb] [Em] over a very [E] simple jamming [A] chord progression.
So I'll tell you, we'll talk [G] a little bit about the chord progression, because what
we want [D] to do here is use an [E] E minor chord, [Em] followed by F sharp minor, but leaving E [A] in the bass.
Now, the fingering for [Eb] this is really [Bb] easy.
[Eb] Your first finger's going to come to A on [Db] the third string of the second fret, [A] and then
your third and fourth [Db] fingers go to the fourth fret of the fourth and fifth strings, playing
an F [E] sharp and a C sharp.
Now, this is a chord commonly used in a lot of songs.
You'll hear it [Bb] in Sandy Denny's Who Knows Where the Time Goes, [A] Melissa, Allman Brothers
tune, [E] and then we slide it up another half [Db] step to G, but make it a [Em] major chord by moving
your third and fourth fingers to the [E] fifth fret, [Db] and [A] adding your second finger [D] on the
[Eb] third string at the fourth [Em] fret.
That gives us the three notes that you would be playing if you were playing [Eb] a full barred
G, [Ab] [D] barred the third fret in an [Abm] E shape, but we're leaving the bar [Em] off.
That's exactly what happened [A] with the F sharp minor in Mandingo 2.
We were [Dbm] only playing, we were leaving the first, [Bb] second, and sixth [Em] strings open on [Am] those chords.
So, that's kind of the [E] backing [A] rhythm guitar part for [Ab] anything, any [Em] solos that would happen here.
E minor, [A] F sharp minor, with E in the bass.
Technically, this is an F sharp minor 11 chord, with the seventh in the bass, making a fourth
inversion, but
[Abm] save the theory for [A] the heavy theory lesson.
And, sorry, third [B] inversion chord.
And then, G major [Em] at the third fret, third and fourth, fourth and fifth frets.
The [Eb] bar would be at the third if we were there, and you could just keep those [E] going.
[Em]
[E] And the lesson I [Em] have, even has, this has a few minutes of me just playing that, [B] allowing
you to, [Am] first we talk about the [A] Dorian mode, and talk a little bit about playing leads
in there, that are like that.
[Eb] So, if you'd like to see this lesson on [Bb] 8 Miles High, the [Ab] complete lesson is available
at Totally Guitars as part of the [Abm] Target program.
[Db] But we also [Eb] have a lot of free lessons, well [A] over 50 free lessons there [Abm] now.
And [Bb] we have, a lot of [G] those are up here at our YouTube channel, [A] TG Free Lessons.
So check that out if you're [B] interested in some of the free stuff.
We have a lot of free stuff [Ab] there, but then we also have a lot of very, [G] very detailed
stuff available in the Target program at Totally Guitars.
So, [Db] if you're interested in 8 Miles [C] High, or any of the [Bb] other psychedelic [G] songs that
we have done [Ab]
lately, they're all there now.
