[A] [Cm]
[C] [D]
[F] I started playing music [C] quite [F] young because my dad and my brother were musicians.
[C]
[F] I didn't really, I [C] was quite young so I didn't at that stage see [C] it as an outlet for emotion,
I just thought it was the most fun thing I'd ever encountered.
[F] [C] Anyway, we just played covers of [F] [C] Jack Johnson and things like that.
Oh [F] yeah, we never actually [B] got a gig.
It never worked out.
That's kind of [F] why we went to original music.
We always had original music.
We've [C] been making our own music for as long, since [F#] longer than we played [B] covers.
Covers were kind of just this [E] idea we had to [C] make money for, get girls to like us.
[F] The [C] recording side doesn't have the nature of a band [F] at all.
It's mainly me recording and sometimes the other guys are contributing.
But it's very much [C]
viewed as being similar to an electronic project or something,
where it's just layering sounds on top of each other.
[Fm] There are no spontaneous jam outs.
It's just [Am] [Em]
[C] slowly, slowly putting together sounds [G] and slowly making a [F] song.
[Am] Whereas when we play [G] live, [F] we take [C] that song and [G] play it as a band.
[F] So [Em] band qualities [F] [C] are a surface of [G] that.
[F] [Em]
[F] I guess [G] the sound ends up being similar because [Em]
[B] some of us have a similar way of playing [C] instruments.
Jay and I play drums quite similar.
I think these days there are a lot more people doing their own thing as there were in the [F] past.
[F] These days there are less [C] [F] rules.
This is [Em] pretty sexy, [G] isn't it?
I think the general trend of music,
and the recording industry and the radio and stuff,
they're playing a lot more stuff [Gm] that probably wouldn't have been accepted a few years ago.
[G] So people can do whatever they [Gm] want and have it play on the radio.
[Dm] So as a general [D] trend, they're a lot more radical, I think.
[Gm] It's pretty enjoyable.
It's better than working any job.
It's not what I thought it would be when I was a little kid.
I didn't [C] think there would be as much
Not that there is very much hard work, but I [Am] didn't think you'd have to really do [F] anything.
We have to do things like interviews every now and then.
[C]
But [Am] you get to drink margaritas [Em]
in Mexico.
It's pretty [C] good.
It's definitely very enjoyable.
It's better than any job in the world.
[Am]
[Fm] We're working on one at the moment.
[C] But it probably won't be released for a [Fm] long time.
I [C] think Inner Speaker,
[Fm] according to our record label,
is still [G] fresh in people's minds.
But I want to get [E] something out there straight [Em] away.
[F]
[C] [G] But [F] most of the recording [Em] has been [F] finished.
[A] [Am] And I just got [Em] finishing touches [C] to add to it and to mix it.
[G] [F] I'm really excited about it.
I'm a lot more [Em] [F] positive [C] about this album [G] than the last one.
The last [Am] one I was [Em] [F]
[G] always [F] questioning [Am] everything about.
I [G] couldn't be happier.
[F] I was [C] constantly changing [G] things.
Which [F] I'm doing with this one, I guess.
I still [Em] have the same [C] insecurities.
[G] I don't know.
I have [F] a stronger feeling about [F#] it.
