Again, just taking a break to do a quick tutorial on Prince Forever in My Life, the live version
from Cyber Times Tour.
Okay, so when Prince picks up his guitar towards the end of the song, he jams around mainly
[G] [Gm] on a G7 and a C9, so C9 [Dm] chord.
[Gm] So a bar and a half of G and a couple of beats of C.
There's also a little section in the song where the backing singers sing Forever in My Life.
[G] So, they stay on the C [Eb] longer before resolving to the G.
And there's also, just so you've got all the chords, [D] an E9, [Am] so he [Eb] plays [Am] [G] two
[Am]
[G] [Gb] [G] [Gb] So if you watch the live version, you'll see there's [C] a section where he plays an E9 to D9.
So, three times [G] before [Gm] going back into playing some funky licks over the [Em] G and C9.
Okay, so when he's playing the licks, he's using mainly the blues scale mixed with some major notes.
So the blues scale being [Bb] G, [C] Bb, [Dbm] C, [D] C sharp, [F] D, [Gm] F, G, [C] Bb, [G] C, D, F, [Gm] G, Bb.
And for that, also quite often we get a major third, [Em] the B.
He uses the [A] E2 and the A, so the 6 [G] and the 9 from the major scale.
And so when he starts playing, he often plays sort of funky licks around a lot of hammering
from the F to the G, and then sort of [G]
that kind of thing.
So we get a hammer, then a kind of upstroke on the top strings on the third, and then
a little picked F back to the G.
[Gm]
[G] And then finishing with a [Bb] little
[Gm] You hear this quite a lot when he [Bb] plays [G] 3-3, [Em] and then hammers to the major [Bb] B notes.
[Bm] [Gm] So we've got 3-3 on the G and B strings, and [Bm] then hammer to the B [Em] natural [G] on the G string.
[Gm]
That kind of thing.
[Gm] [G] Which he kind of follows then with a little [Gm]
trill on that Bb, [C] [D] then [C] [Gm] resolves back to a C9.
So quite often in this song, you hear Prince playing a little lick, and ending by strumming the C9.
So like that.
[C] [Gm] [C] [Gm] [C]
[Gm] So how he gets there, he can, you know, just kind of [C] do
[Gm] [G] Okay.
You also [Gm] hear him play [G] around [Gm] these notes.
[A]
[Bbm] [F] So he
The 6-6, [Bbm] so that's the F and [A] Bb, then also the [Gm] E and the A, [G] [A] that kind of stuff.
[C] [G] You could play it as a full on [Eb] 9th chord.
[C] [G] [Eb] That kind of thing.
[C] [Gm] [Dbm]
[Gm] Okay.
Just make stuff up around these notes.
It's great to play about with.
You also hear him [Bb] a couple of points play [Em] that [G] inversion of the G7 by 7-6-7.
[Am] And then going down [Dbm] a fret at a time.
[A] [G] All that kind of stuff.
So it's great [C] fun to play about with.
He also does a couple of little bends, [Dbm] [G] which he plays [Am] after that E9 D section.
[Gm] [G] There's a couple of little [C] fast runs [Gm] down.
[C] Again, all using
[Gm] [G] Kind of playing around with the blues scale.
I'm not playing exactly what he's playing, I'm just playing a similar kind of thing.
Because it's great just to play around with the style and enjoy the funk forever in my life.
