[Gbm] [Gb]
[Eb]
[Ab]
[Eb] [B] Alright, today I'm going to take a look at a riff, not really a riff, but it's just a
little piece of filler that Stevie Ray Vaughan played in the song Voodoo Child by Jimi Hendrix.
And no, it's not Voodoo Chili.
If you're a little bit confused on that, you need to go [Gb] online and look up why the song
is named what [E] it's named.
But anyway, [B] there [Gm] gets to be a point in the song [E] where Stevie's just playing a rhythm
[Eb] with double treble.
He [A] plays some funky filler patterns that really [Gb] make the difference in that [B] song.
[Gm] Alright, so the [F] first little piece of filler that he played [Eb] was right down here [Ab] and it
started with playing an open A flat and [Bb] hammering on right away a whole step up.
And then [E] doing the same thing on the string above [Eb] it.
[Db] And then following that by, [Eb]
he starts by [B] playing an open G flat [Gb] here on the G string, [G]
hammering
[Eb] on a half step up to form the middle part of a G major, or excuse me, an E flat major.
[Bbm]
[Ab] [Eb] Now the only [Ab] thing that's tricky [E] is that because he was just so nasty on guitar, he [Ab] would throw
this in there.
[Eb]
Almost as if he was taunting [A] you to try and do it.
Anyway, [Em] what you're doing there is instead of just doing a simple hammer on on the second
note, [Eb] [E] you're actually doing a hammer on and hammer off [Bb] real quick.
[Eb]
So when [Ab] you play it at full speed
Alright, now the second [E] one is [Eb] when he would get through the
He would slide up on the high E [Gb] and slide back down on the low E and then [Ab] play an open
E flat [Eb] [Db] and then immediately slide up here to the 7th fret [Ab] on the G string and hammer
on to the 9th fret.
[Abm]
It's the [Eb] same one that he would play at the beginning, [Gb] [F]
except he's [Eb] just doing a real fast
hammer on [F] and hammer off.
[Eb]
[B] Alright, so the rhythm pattern that he's playing around these is just the main rhythm pattern
of Voodoo Chomp.
And it [Eb] starts with
It's just a hit on the low E flat, followed by two rakes with all the strings muted.
[Gb] Then a bend here on the 3rd fret on the low E string, [Eb]
up to the octave up on the D string right here.
[Ebm] [Gbm] And then he would throw that in there [Eb] after it.
[Gb] Alright, [B] so once again, two hits after [Eb] the low E, [Gbm] followed by this, [Eb] followed by one [B] hit,
then followed [Eb] by two hits on this chord right here, [Gb]
[Eb] [A] [E] and then followed by a real quick
[Eb]
[N] And it would be right about this point that he would [Ab] throw this in.
[Eb]
Or
[Ab] [Eb]
[B] Alright, have some fun with that.
[Dbm] [Gb] [Db]
[B] [N]
