Guitarist Earl Klugh Talks Music chords
Start Jamming...
He is a Grammy winning artist and you can see him performing songs from his most recent CD, The Spice of Life, at Frase Pavilion tonight.
But we're incredibly lucky that Earl is joining us right now.
So welcome very, welcome so much to you [B] Earl.
Oh thank you so much, it's great being here.
[A] Yeah it's great to have you.
So you're clearly a master guitarist.
Talk a little bit about what listeners will experience when you get into your zone.
Oh boy, well I hope it's somewhere [Ab] near the same thing that I'm experiencing.
I [Bm] love melodic music, [A] I love the big crowds, you know, I enjoy talking to [Ab] people before and after the shows.
And [A] what I really, [G] really enjoy is the interplay that I have with my band.
You know, we [A] have a lot of fun all over the world, bringing joyful [Ab] music to people I like to [A] say.
Very blessed.
That's great.
Now your album is called Spice of Life.
I love that title because there are so many ways you could interpret that.
But what is your spice of life here?
How do you interpret that?
You know, [Am] I just, I like so many different types of music.
It's like [Bb] there's very little that I haven't explored or tried to play.
You know, everything from reggae to Indian music to classical music, you know.
And I study piano, play a little harmonica, not much.
[Bm] Yeah, a little bit?
Yeah, a little bit.
So what are your favorites though?
You said lots of different types of music.
If you had to pick?
If I had to pick? Yeah.
[A] If I had to pick, I would probably pick music pretty much of my generation, which was the 60s, 70s.
Oh my goodness.
Made a big, [Ab] big impact on me.
Yeah.
[Bm] So any great inspirations, any [A] guitarists great from the past that you looked up to as a kid that made you want to play the guitar?
Well, you know, I'm a very good friend of George Benson's, you know.
And George and I, I met George when [G] I was 17.
[A] And this was even before George became famous, you know, we became really good friends.
So once I started playing professionally, George [F] took me in his band for a while.
And that's really how I got my start.
Wow.
[A] That's a great start.
Yeah.
Oh, yeah.
Yeah.
He really, he really mentored me, you know, music and otherwise, you know.
Great man.
Great.
Now we've been mentioning, you know, that the fact that the show will be at the Phrase tonight at 8 o'clock.
So talk a little bit about your show, your performance, what people can expect when you're on the stage.
Well, we're going to have a lot of things going on, you know, besides myself playing, I have David Lee, who is a member, former member of the Funkadelics.
Really?
Yes.
[Ab] And [Bb] we have Nelson Rangel, who is a great saxophonist and probably one of the [A] greatest.
You may laugh at this, but when you hear him, he's one of the world's greatest whistlers.
[N] That is an interesting talent to have.
Oh, yeah.
No, he's incredible.
You know, I don't like to give away too much, but it's just it's really a special show.
We have a lot of fun.
It sounds like it's kind of like a big jam session on stage and you can just come and watch it happen.
Yeah.
Watch everything unfold.
Do you guys improvise a lot as well?
Oh, yeah.
Are you kidding?
Yeah.
Yeah.
We all improvise.
We're getting too old to remember everything.
Wonderful.
We're very excited to hear you perform later, so make sure you guys stick around for that.
Earl will be performing.
Yes.
And then just a reminder, tonight also at 8 o'clock at the Phrase.
Thank you so much, Earl.
Thanks, Earl.
We'll catch up
