When I got into the blues, there was nobody in my family who directly related to it.
Their lives had come up out of it, but my family was progressive and forward thinking
and they were into the Civil Rights Movement and the things that had to do with making progress.
It does turn out though that my grandfather used to play a harmonica I am told.
Never heard him do a note.
And his brothers used to play instruments and I imagine there was some sort of a string band.
This is all stuff I was told.
I remember playing a record by Taj Mahal one day and asking my grandmother to listen.
It was Taj doing the track lining song.
What I hate about lining track, these old boats about to break on my back.
Well when the record was over, my grandmother sang back several verses that weren't on the
record that she learned as the wife of a track liner.
So my grandmother and her mate, my granddad, who I really didn't get to know, were people
who came up out of the blues but no this was not what was really going on in our home.
And so when I played the blues for my folks, they didn't know where it came from, why I
was doing it.
My grandmother was pleased, but she was a church going lady so she wasn't particularly
into the bawdy kind of stuff that I would play.
So there is no simple answer to the question, where was my family in relationship to this
blues that I was learning and allowing to evolve inside of me.
