Hey everybody, it's Joey with The Joey Guitar right [G] here on YouTube.
And today we've got one of the, I [D#] guess this is the first intro lick [B] for Honky Tonk [N] Women
by The Rolling Stones.
It's a very cool tune, check it out.
This [G] lick, well first of all let me play it for [D] you.
[G]
Play it again.
[D]
This lick is based around the G major pentatonic scale and it's, I guess it's what [C] you would
call, what some folks would call a steel bend or a steel guitar bend, which is one of those
kind of [F#] tricks that you can do on a regular electric guitar like this Telecaster.
But you do bends that kind [G] of imitate the sound [D#] of a pedal steel guitar.
[F] So this is one of those kind of things.
Basically, [G] how you do it, I've seen different people do it different ways, but the way I
do it is I take my pinky here, bar it across the third [G] fret, first and second strings with
that one finger.
And then in this position, [D]
[B] maybe up on [F#] different places on the neck I'll use different [D] fingering
for this, [D#] but down here so close to the [Bm] nut down here, [G] I'll bar my pinky across the first
and second strings on the third fret.
[F#] And then I take my second finger, put it on the [D] second fret third string and my first
finger back here on the first fret third string, because that's the string, the third string
is the one that we're going to be bending up.
So I want this finger back here to help my [F#] second finger bend the string up.
In this particular position, I don't think I really use my third finger too much [G] for
this, but you can if you want to do whatever is comfortable for you.
[B] But what you want to do is keep this bar or this pinky here barred on those two strings.
Don't bend those strings at all.
And but [N] you bend the third string, but you want to pick all three of the strings.
The way I'm picking this is I'm using my pick and these two fingers down [F#] here.
[C] Some folks call it a hybrid picking [B] style.
I don't really know what you call it.
I guess that's what I will call it.
A hybrid picking style where you use your pick [D]
and your fingers.
Except in this case, we're going to be plucking them all three at the same time.
So [F#] here's how we do it.
Keep these two notes here [N] barred down with your pinky.
This is the one that's going to bend up.
We're only picking this first, second and third strings on this whole thing.
So you want to [G] take the strings, pick them, bend it up.
And you want to bend it [A] up so that your second string, excuse me, [C#] your third string, second
[Am] fret is [F#] at the same pitch [B] that this B note would be on the fourth [N] fret of the third string.
You don't play the fourth fret, but you bend the second string up to the pitch of the fourth fret.
[G] Just like that.
So you bend it up.
And then you bend it back down.
[D]
And then you take this one off altogether.
So the only notes that you're actually fretting are [F] this G note and the D note.
The first and [G] second strings on the third fret.
You also pick your third string open at the same time.
So so far.
[D]
And then you want to come back and put your second finger back on there.
[G] Take it off again.
[A] So far [D] we've got.
[G]
I'll do that again.
[G#] Okay.
Then you want to put your finger, second finger back on that same note.
Bend it [E] up and down again.
[G] Take it off.
And then you want to take your second finger and put it up here [E] on the second fret fourth string.
It's an E note.
So so far we've got.
[E]
And the very last part.
[G] Do that thing again where your second finger is off, but you still pluck all three strings.
[D] Put that note [A] back on there on that A note, the second fret on the third string.
Pluck all three.
[G]
And then take it off and pick all three again.
So far.
[D]
That's the lick right there.
I'm going to do it a couple more times kind of slowly.
[D]
[G] [E]
One more time kind of slowly.
[D]
[G]
I'm also going to [Cm] show you how the lick fits into the tune.
The beginning of the song just [D] starts with.
[G#] Just kind of hitting that couple notes from that G chord.
[F#] And the timing [G] is.
And then on with [N] the rest of the song.
So there's the lick Honky Tonk Women by the Rolling Stones.
Check it out.
[F] Great tune.
