How to play a Salsa montuno (tumbao) on the piano - tutorial #2 chords
Start Jamming...
Hello, I'm Vanessa Rodriguez, and this is the second part in my series of tutorial videos about salsa montunos.
So the last time we looked at the basic tumbao rhythm for the 2-3 clave,
[C] which goes like this.
[A]
[C]
[C] [C#]
So now we're going to talk about how to build on that and make the rhythms a little bit more complex,
but still making sure that everything fits with the clave.
That's the most important thing.
Everything has [F#] to work with the phrasing.
The 2-side is generally [G] more straight, and the 3-side rolls a bit more.
The phrasing [C#] anticipates the 3.
So on the 2-side you have, so it's pretty straight.
But then on the 3-side you have, kind of runs away.
Well, not quite.
You don't want it to rush.
But that anticipated phrasing on the 3-bar is [D] really, really [G#] important.
This part, done?
So it's really [F#] important to keep that anticipated rather than on the beat.
And you'll see what I mean.
So we're going to start [C#] with the same rhythm that I showed you before,
using a basic chord progression in C major.
It's going to be G to C, so 5 to 1.
Two bars of G, two bars of C. Like this.
[F] [G]
[F] [C]
[F] [G] [F] [G]
[F] [C] [Dm] [C]
[F] [G] [F] [G]
[F] [C] [F] [C]
[F] [G] [F] [G]
[C] [F] [C]
[F] [G] [N] So that was the basic rhythm that we started out with.
So now I'm going to show you a variation where we're just adding one eighth note to the 2-side.
And you'll see it decorates it a little bit.
And you'll also see that you can do different things with the melody,
but keeping the rhythm exactly the same.
So here's the second [G] example.
[D#m]
[G] [F] [C] [F]
[C] [F] [G]
[F] [C]
[F] [G]
[F] [Em] So now I'm going to keep the 2-side of the clave the same and then add more to the 3-side.
[Dm] [G]
[F] [C] [F] [C]
[F] [G] [B] [G]
[C] [F] [C]
[F] [G] [D#m] [G]
[C] [F] [C]
[F] [G] [D#m] [G]
[F] [C]
[F] [G] Now I will add another eighth note to the 2-side and then simplify the 3-side a little bit.
So here's another variation.
[F] [C]
[F] [C] [F] [G]
[F] [C]
[F] [C] [F] [G]
[F] [C]
[F] [C] [G]
[F] [C]
[F] [G]
So now I'll keep the 2-side the same and embellish the 3-side a little bit more.
[C]
[F] [G]
[C]
[F] [F] [F#]
Okay, now I'm going to play a [D#] variation that's all eighth notes
except for that one tied note in between the two [F#] measures.
So the rhythm's going to be
So [B]
keeping that tied anticipated note leading up to the 3-side of the clave.
Okay, everything else is eighth notes.
[G]
[C]
[D]
[G] [C]
[F]
[G] [C]
[F] [C] [F] [G]
[F] [G] [F] [C]
[F] [C] [F] [G]
[F] [G] [F] [C]
[F] [C] [F] [G]
So now I'll speed it up a little bit and try to put all of those ideas together
to show you how you can really put a lot of variation into a timbau
and still stay within 2-3 clave, even with the same basic melody.
There's a lot of variation you can do just with the rhythm.
[F] [G] [F]
[C] [B]
[F] [C] [F]
[G] [B]
[C] [F] [B] [G]
[F] [C] [G]
[F] [Dm] [Em] [C]
[G] [Em]
[F] [C] [F#] [B]
[Dm] [C]
[G] [F] [C]
[G]
[Em] So [F] [C] [G]
[F] [C] now I'm going to play a variation that's all eighth notes.
[F]

_ _ [Dm] _ _ _ _ [C] _ _
_ [G] _ _ _ _ [F] _ _ [C] _
_ _ _ _ [G] _ _ _ _
