Hello everyone, my name is Vanessa Rodriguez and today I'm going to show you how to play
Salsa Montuno or Timbao as it's sometimes known on the piano
So the first most important thing before we even touch the piano is to talk about the rhythm
everything in the salsa band has to go with the clave which
Looks like this
one two three four
That's the three two clave now
They can also go the other way and the two three clave starts with the two side one two three four
so today we're only going to talk about two three clave and
The basic piano rhythm that goes with the two three clave
Goes like this
one two three four
So I'm going to play a very traditional simple
salsa Montuno
with that rhythm
[C]
[Em] [C]
[N] you
Now I'm going to play that exact same idea, but in a minor key
[Cm] [G] [A] [Cm] Keep your rhythm [A]
[Cm] exactly the [A] same
[Cm] [G] [A]
[Cm] [A] [Cm] [C]

[Cm] [G] [A] [Cm] [Am]
[Cm] [A] [C] you
[N] There are endless possibilities of
Timbao and Montuno with that without changing that rhythm at all
Take this one one

you
Hear something that kind of sounds like a Timbao, but it's not quite right and you can't really
put your finger on why that is and it's
Usually almost always because there's something a little bit wrong with the rhythm
So here's an example of the Montuno played with the wrong rhythm
And then I'll play with the correct rhythm after and you'll see the difference so here's the wrong way
[Cm] [B]
[Eb] [Cm] Right [B]
[Eb] [Cm] [N]
the right way would be like this
[Cm] [B] [Eb]
[Cm] [B] [Eb] [Cm] Always
[B] [Eb] [Cm]

[N]
Now there are of course
Many things you can do building on that rhythm, but that's the basic
That's the basic rhythm of the Timbao
And if you stick to that and add things and take things away as long as that basic rhythm is there
The Montuno is going to sound awesome, and it's going to groove and you're not going to get yelled at by the Cuban guys
