How to play: D'Angelo - Untitled (how does it feel). Original Piano lesson. Tutorial. chords
Start Jamming...
Hey everybody!
This week we're gonna do Untitled by The Angelo.
A song with pretty heavy voicings.
[D] A really good exercise for practicing your extension notes.
Also for practicing your own
creativity with inversions and all.
I use voicings here which I indicate also in the pictures.
That work perfectly fine but I'll also show you that it's okay to mess around with the notes
and choose your own inversions.
So let's take a look at [F#] the end result first.
[G]
[Am]
[D] [G] [A] [D] [C]
[E] [D]
[F#] [G] [Am]
[G]
[C] [Gm]
[D] [F#] [G]
[Am] [Em]
[G] [D] [G]
[C] [Am] [A#] [D]
[F#] [G] [A] [Am]
[G]
[A] [D] [C]
[A] [D] Okay so remember two things.
The key is D and these chords are used for the verse as well as
the chorus.
Let's start with the first chord.
That's a D.
Just a regular D.
Play D with your
left hand and like this with your right.
So the nine of the D or the two however you want to see
that E note.
You see what I do?
Play that quickly and move it towards an F sharp.
You can play this
chord however you want.
I'll play it like this but I also play like this in the end result.
You see like this make it really full.
That's a D with a four note voicing.
[F#] Octaves in the bass
whichever you want.
Then this [G] part [A] the melody is [F#] F sharp [G] G [A] A played with both your left [F#] and your
[G] right hand [A]
and that [C] falls on the A [Am] minor nine.
[A] So an A in the left hand you can play octaves.
That's
what I do.
You can also [G] play just one note [C] and this is the [G] voicing right.
A G [B] a B a [C] C and [E] an E.
[Em] [Am] Here I'll show you where this comes from.
This is a regular A [C] minor.
This is the seventh and there's
the ninth.
We move the ninth [Bm]
the B an [D#] octave down.
Do the same [G] thing with the G an octave down.
Leave out the root note [C] in your right hand and there's your voicing for A minor nine.
Really
smooth so forth.
All right that's A minor nine [A] the second chord.
[G] Then we go to G major ninth again
a ninth.
So it's a [F#] G play G in [A] your left [Bm] hand the right hand plays F sharp A B and D [G] like this
voicing.
But again it's yours to choose what voicing.
Here's where it comes from just a regular
G.
There's the major [D] seventh and the [G] A here is the ninth.
The voicing that [D] I use here move [F#] the A
down an octave the F sharp down an octave leave out the [D] root [Bm] again.
It's the same [F#] same principle
as [A] with the A minor [Bm] chord.
[G]
You can also voice it like this or like this.
However just play around
with these notes.
D'Angelo also plays around with these notes himself.
It doesn't stick [F#m] to
one voicing.
[Em] Then [D] this part that's a little more difficult.
[C]
[F#m] [F#] It's [Em] F sharp E D [D] with your right hand
and F sharp G A with your left hand played [C] together and then go to the C nine.
[F#m] [Em] [D]
It's [A] optional to
keep [Em] that A with [D] your pinky of the right [C] hand and then fall onto this C nine which is a C
[A#] that's the [D] seventh a B flat [C] a nine a third and a fifth.
So B flat D E [Gm] [C] G in your right hand
[A#] like this [C] or we [Gm] can also use this voicing one inversion down and then there's the 13th that
that's [F#m] the A.
[C] So you go [D] from this [C] to here the [Gm] C ninth and then go to that 13 [D] there [C] and go back
to D.
So this voicing [Gm] and then there use the [C] A.
[D] [F#] Okay so those [G] four [Am] chords repeat them again.
[Em] These are a set [G] for both the chorus [A] and the [D] verse.
[C] Well that's it.
