How to play fast blues with Lloyd Spiegel and wazinator stompbox chords
Start Jamming...
Give you some stuff here
That rhythm that rhythm that you like so much that little funky rhythm
I get asked about it a lot.
You know it seemed like a really
Just a natural thing for me to do because I was trying to you know sound like James Brown's orchestra
But just playing on my own
Yeah, I just you know I'm just in an E chord in with a G on a capo on the G
So it's a G chord, but it's an E shape
But what I'm actually doing is I'm
[Eb] I'm playing drums here.
That's the first thing you know
[F]
No pick
[Bb] [G]
And the stomp will just drive it along but underneath
[Dbm] I'm just playing drums.
Yeah sure sure
Just basically get a drum beat going
[Db] with your right hand and then what I do is [G] I play a strike chord and
Then what I'm actually doing is I'm getting right underneath the E string
And I'm plucking it right out
[Gm] Almost to the point where you think you're gonna break it because that's gonna be your backbeat right
Because your standard beats pump in here, and then you get your backbeat underneath it, so
[G] And I just get a little riff happening
Which is just an old kind of Dutch Tildes thing
[G]
But I've just sort of modernized it a tad
[Eb]
So now I'm getting a rhythm.
You know I've got my my keyboards in my head
I've got my bass guitar my drums down here and here
[C] And I'm so now I'm okay there we [G] go
now
Underneath and then I'm playing a little riff
Okay,
[Gm] [G] and we slowly just speed that up
And the other thing I'll share
[C] My little hammer-on technique.
I've been doing for years and years
When I play all this stuff
[Bb]
[G] [Gb] I learnt that kind of thing from a guy named Jeff Atchison [E] amazing Melbourne [Gb] blues player
Who kind of got it I think probably from Angus Young you know I think that it's an ACDC thing and ACDC are notorious
For being [Eb] blues fans everything they do comes from Chuck Berry or lightning Hopkins, so I don't know where that technique really started but
It starts with this riff
Okay, so we're playing pulling off
[A]
playing
[Eb] Pulling off and then playing open
[Bb] Yep One
[Gm] Hang on it's hard to [Gm] do
[G] [Eb]
[D] One and two [Gm] and
Two [D]
and [Eb] and slowing down again one
The trick is not to watch my left hand.
It's really all happening at the right so
off
[G]
play [Eb] off
play
[Gm] And I used to sit in front of the TV doing that
I got shown that as a kid
And I thought it was the best thing ever I started doing this and I started changing notes around
[Bb] [Gb]
[D] [G]
[D]
[Ab] And that really is mostly smoke and mirrors
You know it's all so what you're not doing because all those pull-offs as long as you're doing it strong enough
[A] Again something I took from dance music.
You know that that build up, so so I'll start with um you know quite often
I do that little
[G] ACDC riff you know kind of thing
I'll use it there
So I'll start to double up now
Now we're building up like a dance music track [D]
and [Bb]
[C] [B]
then bring it back home, so you know I kind of use it a bit like a
Like like a part of the the energy of the track you know which it absolutely has to be that's your beat
That's that's the the soul of the song
hmm
[F] My absolute pleasure, thank you
Thank you for the product.
It's amazing.
It's exactly what I've what I've needed so it's added a huge element to the show
