Hi, welcome to 5-Minute Guitar Lessons.
In today's lesson, we're going to learn I Shot the Sheriff by Bob Marley.
And that is on the 1973 album Burnin'.
This song uses a capo on the 3rd fret.
So when I'm putting my capo on, I'm always sure to put it just beside the fret.
That way I get a nice clean sound.
Also, take a moment to download our chord chart.
There's a link to that in the description.
That'll help you follow along with this lesson and with the original recording.
Alright, here we go.
_ _ _ Here are the chords we'll use in this song.
E minor, [Gm] _ _ _ _ _ [Cm] A minor, _ _ _ _ B minor, [Dm] _
_ _ _ [Eb] and C. _ _
_ _ _ _ Let's try the chorus using downstrokes only.
We'll play 4 downstrokes per bar.
1, 2, 3, [Gm] 4.
_ _ _ [Cm] _ _ _ _ [Gm] _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ [Cm] _ _ _ _ [Gm] _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ The strumming pattern goes down, up, down, down, up.
_ _ _ And we can divide that into two parts.
First, we have down, up, down. _ _ _
_ And then we have down, up.
_ _ [Eb] _
When we put that all together, we get down, up, down, down, up. _
_ _ Now let's try that over the chords to the verse. _
_ _ _ 1, 2, 3, 4.
_ _ _ [Cm] _ _ _ _ [Gm] _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ [Cm] _ _ _ _ [Gm] _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ We can make the strumming pattern in this song a little bit cooler by adding some muting after each upstroke.
I'll show you what I mean.
_ _ _ [Cm] _ _ _ _ [Gm] _
_ _ _ [A] So you can see after each upstroke, I'm smacking the guitar.
[Gm] I'll do [Cm] _ _ _ _
that in really slow motion here.
[Gm] Down, up, smack, down.
_ [B] So after [Cm] each of the upstrokes, [Gm] I'm smacking. _ _ _
_ [Eb] And just try to incorporate that and try to really feel the groove because I find that really helps this tune come alive.
Now _ _ _ _ _
[Dm] _ _ [Gm] _ _ _ [Eb] _ _ [Dm] _
_ [Gm] _ _ [Eb] _ _ [Dm] _ _ [Gm] _
_ _ _ [Dm] _ _ [Gm] _ _ _
_ [Eb] let's try the chorus together. _ _ _
1, 2, 3, 4.
_ [Dm] _ _ [Gm] _ _ _ _ [Eb] _ _ [Dm] _ _ [Gm] _
_ _ _ [Eb] _ _ [Dm] _ _ [Gm] _
_ _ _ _ _ [Dm] _ _ [Gm] _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
