How are you?
You know what always attracted me to Knock on Wood, besides the massive groove and the
great song that it is, is from a guitar player's perspective, the licks that he plays between
the verse chords, cropper, I mean, it just knocks me out.
And that's one of the first tunes I ever learned how to play.
And not that that means shit, but I just could not figure out what in the world was happening
in those verse chords.
Well, by the time I got that down, I thought I was onto something, and sure enough, I was.
Because that stuff revolves [Em] around these [B] double [F#m]-stop [C#m] [Em] thirds.
[D#] [Bm] [A] [C#]
[C] [Bm] [A] And [D#] [Bm]
[A] those [B] things are [A] a big
[F#] [Em] [C#m] [Bm]
[A] [N] part of that sound, you know what I'm talking about.
And there's got to be two dozen videos of what Knock on Wood is going on, and I've never
seen one, I ain't looked at them all, but I've never seen [E] one that covers the [A] verse
chords, [D#m] or the fills.
[C#m] [G] [A]
[B] [A#] [Bm] [A] [C] [Bm] [A]
[E] [G] So let me play along with this, and then I'll talk about that other stuff in
[N] a second.
[Em]
[A] [B]
[D] [B] I hope [A] you enjoy this. That.
[Em]
[D] [N] And double-stop thirds, two notes [A] played simultaneously.
[C#m] [Bm] [A]
[G#] There's about five of those, maybe [G] [N] six on the recording.
And they're going from A to E, the A chord to the E chord.
And the other ones, there's two of them, they're going from the E chord back to the A chord.
I think [E] by now, everybody probably [Em] knows these are barre [A] chords.
[N] Not everybody, of course, but you know what I'm talking about.
But when you get into the verse, what I'm hearing him do is play this, you know, that
thing is so fat, the groove on this is just, oh man.
And he's adding to that by [F#m] the way, and [A] [B]
after he hits this C to the A, there's [E] another,
I try to do this slowly, good [A] luck, there's another flick in there.
[E]
Yeah, [Am] it [N] just happens for me.
I can't explain this, I'm not schooled enough to give you the beat values and stuff.
There are people who are, that's why I say get a teacher, I'm not nobody's teacher.
But anyway, when you're playing this, make sure that you play just the top three [F#m] strings.
[C#m]
[G] When you [F#m] hammer [A]
from
[G#m] [A]
[G] [E]
Right.
And so, [N]
there's like five variations of that double stop.
[G#] They all are approached from a half step [C#m] below, [G] to, [A#] and then [A] to, and then going [E] from the E
chord to the A chord, [F#] there's two, happens twice in the song.
[Em] [F#]
[E]
[F#m] [E] And those are double stop thirds as well, by the E chord to the A chord.
Right, [C#]
[E] [G] [N] and then it goes back to the A.
Anyway, if you listen closely, you can figure out all those little variations, trust your
ear, even if you're just starting off, you [F#] can just play, [A]
[E] [N] or you can just play, [B] [C#m]
[F#] [E] and do
it one string rather [F#m] than
[N] Take your time, practice slowly.
There's one thing I can say for sure about teaching guitar, any guitar teacher's gonna
tell you that you don't rush, get one thing done at one tempo, then move on to the next one.
Yeah.
[E]
[G] [A] [B]
So
[D] [B] [A]
[E]
[A]
[D] [E]
Right.
[A] [E]
[A] [C]
[E] [Em] [A]
[B] [D] [B]
[E] [A]
[F#m]
[E]
and
there [N] you have it
and there i have it too obviously and uh
i can tell you that in the bridge of the song where it goes
and uh
there's an F sharp he's not playing nothing
uh
you know what?
let me get that part right here, let me show you what i'm talking about
uh
right here
[C] [E]
[G] [A] [B]
[D] [B] [A] [G] [C] [F#] that's an F sharp he's not playing
[D#] G sharp [G#m] he's not [A] playing, A he's not playing, [C] but he plays
[B] [F#m]
which is just a uh
[C#] a C and [B] a B
there you have it, knock on wood
if you have any questions
or [N]
if you want uh
well, you know
