[N] [Ebm] Hi, I'm Rick Emmett from Triumph and I'm here in the CBC studio to show you some [Em] Triumph stuff on guitar
[C] in particular on the double X songs that had kind of
[E] Entered into the public's consciousness by way of tunics instead of just one
[Eb] The song I'd like to look at is called magic power.
[D] It's from the Allied Forces album [C] that came out sort of 81
I think and this was a pretty [Eb] big song for us, especially in the States [C] got a lot of airplay on [E] MTV and
[C] FM radio stations, [D] so
[G] You know if you walked [Gb] into a music store [Eb] somewhere in
1982 this guitar player would have been sitting there in the [Db] music store playing this little chord progression that I'm gonna play for you [D] now
It was [C] in the key of D and it [Eb] had this kind of an arpeggiated little part that [D] started the song
[C]
[Bm]
[C]
So it's it's fairly [Eb] deliberate that [Gm] it has a little melody [E] that's being played on the [Ebm] top of the
arpeggiating chords [D] the progression itself is just going D and then [C] a kind of a
C add 9 C sus 2 kind of thing [B] and then a G over B and
[G] Then [C] the C again, [Bb] and it's looping like that so that [D] melody is like
[C]
[Em] [Bm] Daddy
[C]
So you get that little [D] walking melody [Fm] and then there's [Gb] notes that can be played in behind that which became
I [B] think sort of a keyboard little and it was like a [C] flutie kind of sound that [D] was going like
Da da [C] dee da
Ba [Bm] da da da
Da [C] da
So pretty folky kind of a thing and
[Gb] That's essentially what goes under the front [D] chunk of the verse by the time it gets to the [F] sort of the development section it's like
[D] The part that goes like I'm you
[C] Wow
[Bm]
Free which is gonna be the [G] chorus later
so now we get a little walking thing where we go to a G 5 and then a [Gbm] D over F sharp and
[Em] then an E minor 7 a D [Gbm] over F sharp [G] a G and
[A] A sus a so I'll show you that [D] again a little slower
You get this progression in the course.
That's like D
[C] The C [Bm] add 9 D over B [G] and now the G [Gbm] walks down
[Em] E minor 7 [Gbm] D over F sharp
[G]
A [A] sus a and I'm playing it here.
It's a different voicing in here, but
Sounds pretty good when it's here.
That's the Pete Townsend
pretty good [D] sound
[C] question is like this
[G]
[Gbm] [Em]
[D] [A]
And now we can switch next [Eb] and we can play the lead melody [D] which was
[Gbm] [A]
[Gbm] [D]
[A] Underneath that would have been a chunking kind of [D] eights part that was like
D chord
[C]
[Bm]
[C] See add 9
[D]
D 5
[C]
You can notice [Gb] that I'm trying to play accents, it's not just
Which would be boring [D] you get that
[C] The accents are very [Bm] important and you'll notice I'm in with my [D] right hand.
I mute
[Eb] but when I hit those hard ones, I open [D] it up so
[C]
[Bm] [E] People think guitar [F] players are all about playing fancy [E] stuff
but to me
this is where the real heart of good guitar playing is that you play really good rhythm parts [D] and
You lock with [Db] the bass and the drums and [D] so that's a really important part of that song that rhythm part
[C]
and then [A] it has a
That's like an a [B] 5 b 5 [C] c
[G] This [A] is like a B verse now [B] that's leading to the chorus when [A] the whole bands in that a sus again
[D]
[C] [G]
[Gb] [Em] [Gbm]
[G] [A]
[D] [C]
[Bm] [G]
[Gbm] This [Em] is [Gbm] very foolish I think
[A]
I'm gonna show you [Ab] one more thing about this tune just because it's fun and it's 12 stringy
[Eb] [Em] It has a lead into the [Eb] bridge, [C] which is one [Ebm] chord form that slides up the neck
So for guys that are beginners [E] and girls to [Ab] people people [Gb] folks
There are just learning
It's a D [Bb] form [D] like this in this position
Up [Bb] to the fifth [Dm] fret.
So now it's an F over D
[G] G over D
[Dm]
[D] B [Bb] flat over D [C]
C [D] D [Eb] so and it [D] was it was the bridge
[Dm]
[G]
[Bb] [Am]
[D]
[Dm]
[G] You slide [Dm] back to F over D
[C] G [G] and [A] now an A that's the trip
[Dm] tension of the B flat
[Am] and we switch next [D] and
[G]
[D] [G] This is a standard power chord kind of thing D [B] C G.
I hope you've [D] enjoyed this insight into magic power
