Now, as I said earlier, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones changed hats for this one.
On most recordings where there's mandolin, it was John Paul Jones playing mandolin.
On this one, it's Jimmy and John is playing the guitar.
And John enters on the verse, and this part is pretty much simple background accompaniment.
Mandolin definitely takes precedence in this song.
The guitar part at the [Em] verse is a two-bar phrase that repeats over and over again.
The two-bar phrase goes from an open A, well, it goes from like the open strings [Ab] to an [A] A5 chord.
[Gm] [A] So, it's,
[G] [A] [Em]
[C]
[A] so what am I playing?
Basically, I'm hammering from the open strings to an A5, strumming [G] to a G over B, then I
do it [Am] again [G] to [C] a C.
And that's the two-measure [G] phrase, and that just repeats, like I said,
over and over.
So, if we were to play it slowly, it sounds something like this.
Two, three, four.
[Am] [G] [Em]
[C] [Em] [A]
[G] [A] [G]
[Am] [G] [Em]
[C]
That goes for eight bars, and then the verse ends with a really cool mandolin part that
you'll hear in a bit.
And against that mandolin part is just a simple D chord in half notes.
Look at your music example three, or measure 21 in the music, and you'll see all [D] it is is this.
[A] [G] [Am]
[G] [Am]
[G] [D] [Am]
[G] [Am] [D]
[G] [Am] [C]
[D] [G] [D] [Am] [D]
