Howdy out there folks, my name is Ryan and you are at musicwithryan.com and for today's
lesson I'm going to show you the old time tune Turkey and Straw and I got a really cool arrangement.
I get a lot of talk about cross picking and questions about it so the B part is going
to have a lot of cross picking.
But overall the melody is very straight forward so I'd say probably an intermediate arrangement
for you here.
So let's go ahead and give the arrangement a listen to and then we'll start walking through
it measure by measure.

[N] Okay so as you see, straight forward arrangement sticking real close to the melody and there's
some trippy stuff in there with the cross picking and all and we're going to go over
that real in depth and make sure you got a good handle on what's going on.
In the lesson I'm going to have close ups of the left and right hand and the tabs are
going to be on the screen for you and if you like what you see I'd ask you to go over to
my website musicwithryan.com and there you can check out the full video lesson and if
you purchase that you'll get the, it's about close 18-20 minutes of the lesson and you
get tabs and two backing tracks for this song as well and give you a chance to practice
along with at a slow and medium tempo and I actually go over a little bit of my rhythm
playing at the end of the video lesson as well.
I got some really cool stuff over at my website, my e-book which I'm super proud of and some
many other videos like this one.
So let's go ahead and start diving into this lesson measure by measure.
Thanks for your support out [G] there.
Here we go.
Alright so let's go ahead and break this song down a couple measures at a time and again
the numbers on the top of the staff are your fingerings in your left hand and the numbers
or the markings in your right hand are the right hand pick directions and this song is
in the key of G of course working out of G position.
So the first two measures it starts on beat 4 and I'm going to be using my 1 and 3 a lot
hopping back and forth in the 2nd and 4th measure.
Starting on the G string in the 4th fret with my 3rd finger.
[A] [G] [A]
[C]
And let's do it again I'm going to give you a little [E] count.
1, [B] 2, 3.
[G] [C]
[F#] My 3rd finger there on the 4th fret of the D.
[G] [A] [Gm] And [B] then using my [G] 2nd finger [C] right there on the A string in the 3rd fret.
[B] [D] [G] [D] [D]
[B]
[A] [G]
[C] That might be a little tricky there going from a down on the G up on the D.
Just two open notes in a row sometimes can be a little awkward.
[E] [G]
[D] [C]
[D] [G] [C] The G and the D string are kind of ringing out over top of all [E] that kind of giving that
a nice connected sound.
So those two measures and then moving forward.
[D] [C]
Next two measures.
[D]
[B] [G] [A]
Okay.
D string on the D string.
Open [E] 2nd fret.
[C] [D]
[A] And then here I'm going to do just 3 quarter notes in a row on the 4th [B] fret of the G.
[Am] So that measure is kind of easy relative to [G] the rest of the piece.
[D] [Gm]
[A] And sometimes [Am] I kind of clip them off just to get a little [D] staccato feel to just kind
of sharpen up the playing or just kind of change the dynamics.
It's a pretty easy passage.
[G]
I kind of hold on to the 3rd one a little longer just something different.
And then I play it.
[B] [A] Again it's the little thing sometimes [D] in the playing.
