[C] Hi there folks, you are at MusicWithRyan.com, your place for bluegrass guitar, acoustic
guitar and so much more.
Today's lesson, [F] I'm going to go over You Are My Sunshine.
And I've got a lesson up of it already, but this one's going to be higher quality and
I've got close ups of the left and right hand here.
So it's going to be in the Carter style, in the key of C.
I'm going to walk through it
measure by measure.
Of course, beautiful lullaby.
Everybody knows this tune, so it's a great one to be able to play and accompany yourself.
So let's go ahead and give that arrangement a listen.
1, 2, 3, 4, [G] 1.
[C] [D] [C]
[D] [C]
[D] [E] [F]
[G] [C]
[F]
[G] [C]
[D] [C] [Dm]
[G] [C]
Alright so as you see, [G] straightforward melody.
I guess beginning intermediate arrangement here for a Carter style playing.
And what's great about this is again you get to play the melody while you accompany yourself.
And it's great also [E] because perhaps you could put this into other folk tunes and use a similar
style playing, which makes it really fun to play along to, even by yourself.
So I think that's great.
And if you like this lesson, you can check [N] out my website, MusicWithRyan.com.
And there you can get the full length lesson, close to 20 minutes, get the tabs and two
backing tracks for this lesson.
And I've got some other instructional material over there.
I've got other Carter style stuff, Bury Me Beneath the Willow and I'll Fly Away and Will
Circle Be Unbroken in a similar fashion.
So you can get an idea of what it sounds like.
I know a lot of my students liked to be able to play in this fashion.
So I'm going to share it with you today.
So let's go ahead and break it down measure by measure.
Tabs will be on the screen for you and you can get a chance to see [C] exactly what I'm doing.
So, all right, let's go ahead and walk through it.
All right, great.
So you are my sunshine Carter style.
And as you see, I'm going to play a lot of my C's like this.
Some people might refer to it as a C slash G.
That's what I got written on there for a chord.
That'd be the more proper way this bass note is an actual G note.
And much like C, I just kind of, whoops, I just take my third finger and move it up a
string and replace it with my pinky as a thicker sound.
All right, so I'm going to do that often when I hit a C chord here.
Not every single time through this arrangement, but it's a good one to get used to it.
And I'm going to do it because I want more connectiveness in my playing.
I want certain low notes to ring out over top of the high [B] strings as I continue to play.
So my playing just sounds more fluid and I don't know, [C] just nicer, more connected.
So I'm going to go ahead [G] and go through two measures at a time here.
So I'm going to count us off real slow.
One, two, three, four, one.
[C] [Gm]
[C]
Okay, I'll do that all again.
Starts on beat two and I'm just going to give you a one count for free.
So one.
[D] Open D.
[C]
Okay.
And so [G] the first three are just quarter notes, [C] down, down, open D string, lift up my [D] second finger.
Then I'm going to hit it again and hammer it on.
[C]
And [E] I want that hammer to be, [D] it's a straight eighth note, or two straight eighth notes.
[Em] And then I'm going to strum the bottom three or four strings.
[C] And hit that same fretted note again on the D string.
Okay.
And I don't want to strum down up.
I want to get the last three or four.
Kind of [G] general rule for some alternate strumming or Carter style stuff.
[D] But yeah, that second measure, [C]
[G] those two measures one more time.
One.
[C] [Gm]
[C]
Make sure you follow the down ups, markings underneath the tab staff as well.
Okay, moving on.
We just got in the third and fourth measure, we have quarter notes in the third measure there.
[E] [D]
[E] Just quarter notes [C] on the A string, [E] D, [D] open D.
[E]
[C]
Just an alternate bass thing there.
Just an alternate bass in the fourth measure.
So those two measures again.
Ready, go.
[E] [D] [E] [C]
Okay.
I'm going to go ahead and put those first [G] four together.
One, two, three, four, one.
[C] [G]
[C]
[D] [Em] [C]
So see how that all sounded nice and connected?
[G] And all the low notes are ringing?
I don't want [C] [D]
[C]
[Gm] [E] that staccato feel.
I want [G] a nice, [C] [G] [C]
okay, all ringing out.
Alright, moving on.
