[Am]
Hi, welcome to 5-minute guitar lessons.
In today's lesson, we're gonna learn While My Guitar Gently Weeps by the Beatles, and that's on the
White Album from 1968.
Before we get started, take a moment to download our chord chart.
There's a link to that in the description.
That'll help you follow along with this lesson and the original recording.
Alright, here we go.
Here are the chords used in this song.
A minor, A minor over G,
[C] [F#] A minor over F sharp,
[F] F,
[G] G, [D] D,
[E] E,
and
[C] C.
Let's [Am] try going through the chords to the verse using two down strokes per chord.
1, 2, 3, 4.
[F]
[Am] [G]
[D] [E]
[Am]
[F#] [F]
[Am] [G]
[C] [E]
The strumming pattern goes
down, down, down, up, [Am] down, up, and we're gonna play it one time on each chord.
Let's try it over the chords to the verse.
1, 2, 3, 4.
[F]
[Am] [G]
[D] [E]
[Am]
[F]
[Am] [G]
[C] [E]
[A] Here's the chorus.
[C#m] [F#m]
[C#m] [Bm]
[E] [A]
[C#m] [F#m]
[C#m] [Bm]
[E]
The chorus uses a totally different set of chords than the first section.
The first chord is A,
[A] C sharp minor, [C#m] [F#m] F
sharp minor, [G#] and [Bm] B minor.
The strumming pattern's the same, so I think we're ready to try this part together.
1, 2, 3, [A] 4.
[C#m] [F#m]
[C#m] [Bm]
[E]
[A]
[C#m] [F#m]
[C#m] [Bm]
[E]
So during the chorus, there's one part where he's going from [C#m] C sharp minor [G#] down to a [Bm] B minor.
And
for now, we were just playing it with the strumming pattern and just switching between each chord.
But something really neat that we can do is we can
play the chord between them.
We can play C minor [D#] between C [Bm] sharp [Em] and B minor, [C#m] and it sounds like this.
[Cm] [Bm] So let's see that with the strumming pattern.
[C#m] [Cm] [Bm]
And [C] the reason why that works is because they're the same shape, and bar chords don't have any open strings,
so they can just be put [Em] anywhere on the [D#m] fretboard.
[C#m] [Cm]
[N] And since they're the same shape, and they're only a whole step apart, and there's just one chord between them, it just sounds cool.
You'll hear this on a lot of recordings, like on Till [G#m] There Was You.
[Gm] [F#m]
Even though [E] that's a different bar chord shape, it's still a bar chord, so it still works.
