[G]
Howdy Mahalo Watchers!
It's Julie.
I got my hat on, got my guitar.
I am ready to teach
you country.
I hope you're ready to learn.
Today's song is by the Dixie Chicks, Wide
Open Spaces.
I think this is one of their first singles if I can recall.
It's a while
ago already, but it's a fun song and pretty easy.
So let's get started.
To play in that
key, you're going to need a capo on the second fret.
And [E] the chords you're going to need
for the intro are D major, which is open D, 2, 3, and 2.
[D#] And then G [A] major, which is 3,
2, open, open, [E] 3, and 3.
And so while the violin is doing her thing, this is what you
play.
[A]
[E] [A] [E] [A]
[E] D, [A] G.
[Em] The strumming that I'm doing, [E] let me see if I can break it down for you.
It's like a down, down, down, up, down, up, down, down.
I'll do it a little slower.
[A#] Down,
down, down, up, down, up, down, down.
But really any variation of that will work.
That
just happens to work for me.
So I'll [E] do it again.
D,
[A] G, [E] D, [A] G, [E]
D, [A] [E] G, D.
[A]
I believe [Em] this
goes [B] for, I want to say seven times.
And then there's kind of a little stop time thing that
[F#m] they do with these chords in the intro, which is E minor, which is open, 2, 2, open, open,
[A] open, G major, [E] and D.
So [F#m] it's like, [A] [E]
I'll do that again.
So [F#m] E minor.
[A] [E]
[Gm] And how I'm strumming
that is [A] down, down, down, up, down, [E] down, down.
So [D#m] I'm going to do like [E] one measure
of the D to G into that part so you can kind of hear it.
[A]
[F#m] [A] [E] Who doesn't know what I'm talking
about?
I'll help you know what I'm talking about.
That's actually the line into the verse.
So the verse, we need these chords, D [A] major, G major, and [F#m]
E minor.
[A#] We're going to continue
on with that strumming pattern.
So we got [E] D, [A] G, [E] talking about D, [F#m] E [E] minor, D.
Again,
[A] D, G, [E]
D, D, [F#m] E minor.
[E] Now, you can actually simplify the strumming here, I think.
Let
me do that for you.
You can go down, down, down, down, up, like this.
[A] Who doesn't know
[E] what I'm talking about?
Down, down, [F#m] down, down, up, down, down, down, [E] down, up.
Now
the pre-chorus, [A] we need these chords, G [E] and D, and then the second half of that [A] is G major,
[B] A major, which is open, [G#m] two, two, two, open.
So it's [A] like,
[E] [A]
[B] I'll [A] do that again.
So G, [E] D,
[A] then G, [B]
A.
[E] Wide open spaces.
We all do sometimes, unless you have a phobia, then not so good,
I guess.
Chorus time.
Chorus, we need these chords.
We need D major,
[F#m] E minor, [A] G major,
[B] A major.
[E] Strumming, down, down, down, down, up.
We'll keep it there, [F#m]
[A] [B] [E] like this.
D, [F#m] E minor,
[A] G, [B] A.
We're [E] singing.
[F#m] Wide [A] open spaces, [B] [E]
[F#m] runes will make a [A] big mistake.
[B] She [E] needs [F#m] new [A] faces,
[B]
new notes, a [E] high stake.
D, [F#m] E minor, [A] G, [B] A.
And then we go [D#] back to our verse, go back
through our chorus.
Then we have the bridge part with the violin solo.
I guess we'll call
it solo part, because it's [E] really more like that.
Chords we need, [A] D and G for the first
part.
We go back [E] to the original strumming like this.
[A] [E]
D, [A] G,
[E] D.
And for when the ahs come
in, because they all join in and do their pretty harmonies, we need these chords.
[F#m] D,
E [E] minor, back to D, like this.
[F#m] And
[E] [F#] then we go [B] A major, [A] G major, [E] back to D, like this.
[B]
[A] [E] All together, that solo part, D, [A] [E] G, D, D, [A] G,
[E] D.
[F#m] E minor, [E] G, [B] A, [A] G, [E] D.
And we've got one
more verse, which is actually cut in half here, but same chords.
And then our chorus,
which we play out.
I'll do one more time for you, because it's fun.
D minor, or D major.
[F#m] Wide open [A] spaces.
[B] [E] D, [F#m] E minor, [A] G, [G#m] A major.
[E] Again, D, [F#m] E minor, [A] G, [B] A major.
[E] Keep going
[F#m] forever, [A] because I think the song [B] fades out.
[E] Or you could end on D, and there you have
it guys.
