Hey everybody, welcome to Mahalo.
I'm Julie, I'm your guitar instructor and I am going to teach you how to play Whiskey
Lullaby and this was requested by, who is this requested by?
Amanda!
Thank you, thank you producer.
[Em] Hi Amanda, I'm going to play your request.
So I'm going to show you all the chords you need [B] first.
[D] All the chords you need are D major, which is open, two, three, two.
G [G] major, which is three, two, open, open, three, three.
[Bm] B minor, which you're going to borrow the second fret and it's two, four, four, three and two.
And then also A [A] major, open, two, two, two, open.
Let me show you how to play the little riff in the beginning.
So what you're going to do is you're going to make a modified B minor.
[Bm] So the modified B minor is going to start on the fourth fret of the D string and it's
four, four, three and two.
So basically it's B minor without the bar.
So you're going to [B] strum probably just the last two strings and [E] you're going to hammer
on that second fret of the E like this, [D] like so.
Then pick it, second, [E] open E, second fret B, [C#m] [D] or sorry, third fret B, [C#m] second fret B,
[B]
open B like [E] this again.
[D] [E]
[F#m] [B] Then [E] repeat it, [Bm] [E]
but instead of going down the B string, you're going to go back to the
open E, [Em] [B] hammer on the second [G] fret and then third fret [D] of the E string.
So all together that riff.
[E]
[C#m] [B] [D] [E]
[G] And then I'm going to give you an [D#] option here, you guys.
You can do [D] picking with this.
[G]
You can strum, probably something like down, down, up, down, up, down, down.
Kind of pick it out and see what works for you.
But the [C] chords in [Bm] the intro, in case you don't want to do that riff, are B minor and
[G] G.
And that goes twice.
Now we are into our verse.
And our verse, remember all the chords [B] we need, I just gave them to you.
So we start with D, [D]
[G] then G, [Bm] then B minor, [A] A, [D] D,
[G] G, then [A] A.
So with the vocals, it sounds a little bit like this.
She put [D] him out, D, [G] G, like a burning hot [Bm] cigarette, B minor,
[A] A.
She [D] broke his heart, D, G.
[G] Spent his whole life trying to [A] forget, A.
Then we go B minor.
[Bm] Watch him drink his [A] pain, A.
[D] A little at a time, again, [Bm] B minor.
Could get drunk [A] enough, A.
[D] To get her off his mind until [A] tonight, A.
Okay, now we are into our chorus.
So let's go through it.
We [D] got D, then [G] G, [A] A.
I'm going to do that again so it's a little bit more rhythmically accurate with vocals.
Put [D] that bottle to his [G] head and [A] pull the trigger.
Then we got B minor.
[Bm] He finally drank [A] away A's [G]
memory, G.
Repeat it, [D] D.
Life is short, but this time it [A] was bigger, A.
Then we go B minor.
[Bm]
Strength he had to get [A] up, A [G] to G.
Then we go to [D] D.
We found him with his face down [A] in the pillow, A major.
[Bm]
B minor.
That'll love [A] her, A [G] to G.
Then we [D] go D.
In the [A]
pillow, A.
Then we go G major.
[G]
Angels sang a whiskey [Bm]
lullaby, B minor.
La la la la.
[G]
To G.
[Bm] B minor.
La la la la la la la.
La la la.
[G]
G.
[E] Then [D#] basically what you do guys is just repeat all that again for the second verse and the second chorus.
Then the [C] ending [Bm] is again just B minor [G] to G all the way [E] through.
That pretty much is how you play Whiskey Lullaby by Alison Krauss and Brad Paisley.
