My next guest scored with audiences.
He rocked so hard in the 60s and 70s, he was dubbed a punk pioneer.
Today he's still rocking hard on his new album, Brick by Brick, performing his current single,
Home.
Right on.
[Gb] Please welcome Iggy Pop.

At some universities.
Yeah, it was fun.
I did it a few times.
I was like a student employee, not like invited by the faculty.
Oh yeah.
It was nice.
It was really nice.
And what did you tell them?
Well, basically you try to tell them something really like noble and stuff like that
and then they'll ask you like, well, did you really go to the bathroom on your windowsill or something like, you know.
No, you talk about just
Because you have done some crazy stuff.
I tried to tell them, you know, I think there's a lot of pressure, especially right now in this country.
It's a lot of pressure on people to worry about money and security at an early age.
To really worry right off, God, am I going to be out on the street or what's happening?
What am I going to do to take care of myself?
And so I sort of tell them, look, you know, there's
It's also okay to do something kind of creative.
How long is the lecture you give?
It was about two hours.
Wow.
And I didn't time it.
I just wrote it down and then it ran a couple hours.
Are there things that you've done in your life that you tell them not to do?
There's things I've done in my life that I sort of present both sides of.
We talk about drugs, talk about pornography as a symptom of
Maybe just because people aren't getting enough sex in their normal life.
You know?
So, you know, because like, you know what it is?
Like if you go to like Star Strip or something and you see a lot of these men all in a line.
Just really sort of being hard.
And the girls working it.
It's a strange thing.
So, talk about stuff, you know.
Album looks interesting.
You [E] worked with Don Was of Was That Was?
Yeah.
He's real nice.
Real sort of wide appreciation.
[N] Now, I saw some titles that caught my eye.
First of all, where's Butt Town?
Well, I wrote it out here.
Because, you know, you see a lot of buttocks.
I mean, if you walk around here in the street, the buttock is really kind of featured.
You know?
I mean, you see, you know.
You
[Ebm] know, [Am] I like butt.
Now, I'm wondering how the feminist will like this [B] one here.
Can I Yeah, [Eb] right.
[N] It's actually, it's just a sort of about sexual torment.
It's not really, it's not anti-feminist.
Interesting stuff.
I mean, half of us have one.
You're still married.
Yeah, yeah.
And you got married.
This is interesting.
He married a Japanese policeman's daughter.
Yeah.
What was that guess who's coming to dinner scene like?
We just split.
We just split and sort of called him like from Australia and said, guess what?
Yeah.
I met him later.
And he was really nice guy.
He wore like a pinstripe suit and all.
And he said, I'm like Columbo.
You know, that's his, you know, thing.
Wait, wait, wait.
I'm sorry.
In Tokyo, you know, he only doesn't know much English, but he's a really good guy.
So he learned a little English to talk to me.
So he said, yes, I'm a detective lieutenant like your Columbo.
Oh, yeah.
You know, I tried to relate and everything.
He's a good guy.
I don't know.
I had like orange dreadlocks at the time.
I thought he was really making a stretch.
You know?
Yes, yes.
A lot of people probably look at you, have a hard time believing that Sinatra was a big influence.
I know.
The shadow of your smile as you walk by.
You know, I could sing that stuff.
I was really into him.
I like to see Sinatra sing.
The [A]
first singer I ever heard was Sinatra singing Young at Heart when I was about five years old.
And we'd ride around and like my dad had this big Cadillac.
And I'd sit in the back and my dad would sing along with him.
And I thought, that's cool.
And [G] I liked his voice.
I'm into him.
I'd like to write for him.
That's the one person.
Well, why not?
Yes.
You and like Harry Connick should do a single together.
Yeah, why not?
Are you into Harry?
Yeah, yeah.
You ought to do something.
Oh, it's happening.
This is the new album, Brick by Brick.
I'll be right back.
