My name is KBinoco
Thank you for joining me, and thank you for your support
So let's dive right into it today.
We're going to talk about
Barry Harris and the concept of harmonization
to first
Started I'm gonna go over the Barry Harris scale of chords, which I'm gonna go deep dive deeper into
First we have a C6
followed [D] by a D [Am] diminished C6
[D] D [C] diminished C6 [Ab] D diminished [Am] [B] C6 D [Am] diminished
C6
Okay again
C6
which has a C E G [Dm] a
D diminished which has a D F [Bm] a flat [Am] B C6 again
[Eb] D diminished [Am] again [Ab] C6 D [Am] diminished C6 [Eb] D [Am] diminished C6
I'm basically playing different inversions [Eb] and
The way to get a fuller sound is to what [C] is to play
[Am] two C's right which is two octaves play the C6 in between there and
[B] [Am] Sound it out [Dm] and
[Ab] [B] [C] [N] This gives a much fuller sound okay, so that's a Barry Harris scale of chords now
Barry Harris himself did not really invent this this was
This technique was invented by pianist called Milt Butner and
This is the pianist who was very famous in the swing era played with a lot of
great musicians
From the swing era including Joe Jones the drummer
and
You know including
You know all the most of the players from the swing era we have
Lester Young playing with him
You know and and a whole lot you know Coleman Hawkins and a whole lot of players Okay now throughout
The history of swing era has been used by George Sharon another pianist has been used by
Bill Evans another pianist and many other pianists such as Oscar Peterson and
Barry Harris himself now Barry Harris has made it popular since then again.
I'll play it one more time
[D] [Am]
Now where does it come from this is the basis of it [Dm] the C scale
[Am] [Abm] Has seven notes okay
Most of jazz is played in eight notes especially jazz from the bebop era to later
so they added
one note to it which was
The sharp five we have an a flat
[D] And this [Am] is how it sounds okay now to harmonize that sale
They decided to take the first chords to be a c6
Right and then the second chord to be a D [B] diminished.
How do you so [Dm] that would be a D [D] F a?
[F]
flat B
[Am] And then they will harmonize that until they got the sound of the scale so we have C [D] 6 D diminished C [B] 6 D [Am] diminished
C [F] 6 D [Am] diminished C [Db] 6 D [Am] diminished C 6 okay now like I said
To get a fuller sound of a sax section you could do it with octaves
[D] [Ab] [Am]
Octave just means you have the same notes
And the outer fingers, [Ab] right?
[Am] [G]
[Am] So that's the Barry Harris scale of chords
Now this can be used in various movements, okay?
I'm gonna just move it
using the two five one progression and jazz
[B]
[F] [Am]
You
[G] [Am]
[N] So you see the usefulness is very useful in that
It can be used to harmonize and create movements and various songs
If I use different standards
There's a standard called I should care in the key of C, and I'm gonna you know just try it so just a [F] quick melody
[C] So
[D] [Am] [Dm]
[Gbm] [G] [E] [A]
That's just the beginning chords, [Am] and I used a lot of the movements he heard a lot of [A] this and
[E]
[Am] That's just [N] on using the Barry Harris scale of chords
Now in my next video.
I'll talk about the history of the scale of chords, and how you can go in depth
Into it okay again.
