[E] For me, it really [A] defined who [G] I was, not only as a [D] model, but as a woman and [E] as a black woman.
[A] [E] Halfway through [Am] the 70s, Rosie Vela became one of the most [D] recognized faces [A] in the industry.
[C] [G] [A] In [D] less than [A] a decade, she [C] appeared in an [A] astounding 14 [Am] times on the cover of Vogue.
[D] [A] Rosie's roots weren't quite so glamorous.
She began her career in the fashion mecca of Dallas, Texas.
Jerry Hall was the first model I ever worked with, which is funny, she was 15 and I was 18.
Jerry said to me, now I'm going to Europe, you want to go with [Gbm] me?
I'm going to Paris.
[F] I said, oh no, [G] no, no, no, no, no, no, [D] but thank you for asking.
And, because I had a boyfriend in Little Rock that we had been together for three years.
We would have, you know, gone back and forth over the weekend to see each other.
And he got cancer.
So I just basically stayed there with him in the hospital [E] every day,
slept in the little [D] lazy boy chair, you know, trying to help him get through it.
And we weren't going to let cancer stop us from our plans.
And I married him in the hospital.
After almost a year of sorrow and her untimely loss, Rosie knew she needed to get away.
So she headed to New York, where she soon got a phone call that rejuvenated her [E] career.
And I got called by [D] Vogue.
Alex Dillman called me, God, I have to have that girl.
So the next thing you know, I'm working for them for the next five years of my life.
That was like every other month I had a cover, or every two months I had a cover.
Rosie, however, needed to be more than just good looking.
She needed to be [G] fulfilled.
[F]
[G] [F] I had to have [E] my piano, and I worked on my music, and I [Eb] worked on my music [Bbm] every day [Eb] and every [Am] night.
In 1983, [D]
Rosie had to make [A] a [Cm] choice, modeling or music.
She no [Eb] longer had time for both.
[F] [D]
[C] So where is she [D] now?
Rosie Vela went on to record the [C] critically acclaimed album [F] Zazu.
Well, [G] that's kind of where [A] I am [Bb]
[G] now.

[E]
For Rosie Vela, the life that once seemed so full of difficult [A] choices is now surprisingly simple.
I've [B] always liked to be near a keyboard [E] or a piano, writing and singing and playing.
I can see myself [A] until I'm 100 doing.
[B] I'm quite happy.
