Well, how many of you have heard of a film coming out called the descendants?
Has anyone heard of that?
All right, many of you.
Okay.
There's a film that was shot in Hawaii
And it's gonna come out in maybe about two or three weeks, I think.
And they had a premiere right before I left on this tour
Maybe about three weeks [G] ago at a film festival on Oahu.
And it stars George Clooney, and it's one of the first films
[Ab] To feature exclusively feature Hawaiian music [N] throughout the entire film.
It's really exciting.
[A] The song [D] Ki I Lawe [Gb] is like a character [G] in [Db] the film.
They should write it under the credits as a character.
[Ebm] The film starts with Gabby singing
Kama Kanika Ili Aloha, and it's such a beautiful,
[G] powerful moment.
[C]
And [Eb] the film is a contemporary [A] story set in the islands, and I think it's a really [Ab] good portrayal of
some of the issues and
[Gb]
You know how life is in now, [G] in Hawaii, instead of kind of a [Ab] [D] romanticized
Hollywood film with a luau comedy scene or something.
You know, it has a little bit more depth to it.
It was directed by
Alexander Payne, and he [G] did many movies.
One was [D] called Sideways, if any of you have seen [Gb] that, about wine.
Really a [A] great kind of veiny movie, [D] but very, you know, emotional.
[Eb] So they spent about a year [G] researching music for this, [Eb] and they used a lot of Ki I Lawe, a lot of slack key in the movie.
And so [D] I
was asked to compose two songs for the film, and then
[Ab] three other songs of mine were used.
And one I'd like to play that's from my CD, Bowing My [F] Mind.
It's called Hawaiian Skies.
[Bb]
The director took it and just cut it all up like a puzzle, and put the middle part at the beginning and
changed the [Eb] ending, and stuck it in the middle.
And I got this, you know, this edited version back, and I lowered the pitch on the computer.
And I [Ebm] was like, wow, how did they do that?
It's a totally different arrangement of the song, so I had to learn that, and then go and re-record [D] it for the film.
And so this is what came out.
It's called Hawaiian Skies.
Excuse me.
Right at the moment where [Abm] George Clooney
finds out that his wife had been cheating on him, she's in a coma in the hospital.
[D] He goes to confront her.
[F] Not to give it away.
[D] Talk about a ridiculous sounding plot, right?
But wait till you see the movie, it'll all make sense.
