Hi guys, Gerry Lee Lewis left hand piano patterns.
Now quite a while ago
we did a lesson how to play rock and roll piano and I've had quite a few emails saying
what is the left hand to that?
We've got a few rock and roll piano lessons [F] and
Gerry [G] Lee Lewis has a very distinctive kind of left hand.
What I'm going to do [C] is
kind of slow down the rock and roll [N] left hand, the Gerry Lee Lewis style left hand.
And remember with rock and roll piano, if you come in here to the left hand camera person,
we know that boogie woogie is, let's go from boogie woogie to rock and roll, it might [C] become
clearer.
That's kind of boogie woogie because it's got the swing.
[Cm]
[C] Now [Gm] with [C]
rock and roll,
the Gerry Lee Lewis, you straighten the rhythm so it's, and in effect that is [F#] my version of the
Gerry Lee Lewis [C] left hand.
So it's very [C] slow, so it's ultra slow, it's simply, [G] [C]
[A]
[C]
[G] [C]
speed
[F]
[Cm] it [Cm] [G]
[C]
up, but the trick is to keep it straight.
So very slowly, just in case you don't know what the notes are, the notes are simply, and [A] then [C] A to the C.
C, [G] E, [C] G.
[A]
[C] A down to the C.
G.
It's kind of a [A] rocking motion.
[C]
[F] Up to the four chord and the pattern repeats itself.
[C]
[G] To the five chord, again the pattern just repeats.
[Cm]
[C] And then put straight right hand.
[F]
[C] [G] [F]
[C]
[F]
[C] [Gm] [Cm]
[C] [F]
[C] [Cm]
[C] [G] [C]
[F] [Cm]
[G] [F] [C]
And remember,
[F] [Cm] you know that in the right hand, remember the Gerry [C] Lee Lewis, the rock and roll thing is,
you know rather than the boogie woogie would be, that's boogie woogie.
And remember boogie woogie and rock and roll piano were first classes, look they are, so straighten out the rhythm.
[F] [C] Do it [G] slow and then you can speed up.
[Cm] Hold on a [C] shake going on.
Come on over baby, hold on a shake going on.
[F] Steady on camera [C] person.
[Gm] We ain't faking.
[C] Hold on a shake going on.
Shake baby shake, not you camera person.
[A] Okay, so we get the idea.
So really this lesson has been about the rock and roll left hand,
so I hope the notes have become clear.
And remember that the trick to doing the rock and roll left hand is to play it straight.
[D#] You know, do do do do do do do do do do do do, you know [N] kind of like sledgehammer.
You don't want to go do do do do do because that's boogie woogie, boogie woogie.
You want to go do do do do do do do do.
Like some kind of [C] robot.
Kind of typewriter and speed.
I'm kind of computed as well.
So that is [F]
[C] [G]
[F] [C] [Cm]
the traditional Jerry Lee Lewis left hand style rock and roll piano.
[N] So I hope that's made it clear for you.
And remember it's the left hand we're focusing on this lesson.
Right hand rhythm are a different lesson.
Although I've given you some clues there about what to do.
So practice that left hand.
And remember straighten out the rhythm when you're playing rock and roll.
And listen to some good Jerry Lee Lewis records as well.
And see if you can absorb some of that rock and roll piano sound.
