So I got [Bb] very, very close today to being a victim again.
[N] Doggone it, I hate to admit it, [E] but it's true, and it comes out of this next song that I'd like to do.
David Brower, who I love with all my heart and respect more than I could ever express,
has been after me for how many years?
About five years to write a song called Healing Time on Earth.
[Gb] Four or five years.
[N] And I said, I will.
And I have wanted to [E] desperately.
But somehow it just hasn't come.
And I kept thinking that it's going to be one of those songs,
just one day, you know, it's all going to be there.
And as we got closer to this year's symposium, I really wanted this song.
[N] So I read this wonderful book of David's which came out this year, which I mentioned to you,
called Let the Mountains Talk, Let the Rivers Run.
And I thought, oh, I can use that.
And I read the book and then I read it again.
And I started writing a song.
And this has been going on for a couple of weeks.
And up until 430 yesterday morning, all I had was Let the Mountains Talk, Let the River Run.
So around all of the other activities going on here these last couple of days,
I've been trying to see if something would come through.
And this has lasted up until just [Em] before [E] Melissa's speech,
[G] when I came out and had to be part of the program again.
So, David, I have something.
I don't know how songs happen or where they come from.
It's an incredibly magical thing to me.
Sometimes you literally sweat blood trying to write a song.
Sometimes [Bb] it takes months.
And sometimes it [B] can happen in ten minutes.
Any song I wrote in ten minutes one day [Em] on a ski lift here in Aspen.
Heart to Heart that you heard [B] earlier, I wrote sitting alone one night in a restaurant
overlooking Hong Kong Harbor, having been in China the five weeks prior to that.
Sitting by myself alone on a napkin, [D] I wrote Heart to Heart.
So I don't know how it happens.
And I don't know the words to [N] this song.
I may know some of them.
I don't have a melody.
This is a song in progress, folks.
But Dave, I don't want you to go home from this trip thinking
that damn John Denver is never going to write that song.
[C]
Let the [G] mountains talk.
Let the [C] river run.
There is [G] wisdom here.
There is much to [C] learn.
There [G] is much [Am] to know.
[F] [G] Much to [C] understand.
In this [G] healing time, all across [C] the land,
you have [G] heard my songs for so [C] many years.
You have [G] laughed with me, washed away [C] my tears.
You have [Am] shared my joy.
[F]
[G] You have [C] felt my pain.
In this [G] healing time, walk with me [C] again.
Through these [Em] darker [Am] days, [F] [G]
on this [C] narrow line,
help me [Eb] find [Am] my way.
[F] [G] Help me see [C] the signs.
[G] I am [Am] not afraid.
[F] [G] I am [C] not alone.
You have [G] taught me well.
You have brought [C] me home.
Let the [G] mountains speak.
Let the rivers run.
[C] As the [G] world awakes to the [C] rising sun,
in each brand [Am] new day, [F] [G] in our [C] own rebirth,
in this [G] healing time, on our mother [C]
earth.
Let [Em] the [A] mountains talk.
[F] [G] Let the [C] rivers run.
There [G] is [Am] wisdom here.
[F] [G] There is so much [C] to learn.
In [G] each [Am] brand new day, [F] [G] in our own [C] rebirth,
in this healing [G]
time, for our [C] mother earth.
[G] In each [Am] brand new day, [F] [G] in our [C] own rebirth,
in this healing [G] time, here on [Em] mother earth.
