Thank you.
I had a [A] wonderful, wonderful [D] experience this past September that I'd like to tell you all a little bit about.
I was on a trail [C#] ride with about 40 other men from all over the United [D] States,
and we were in the southwestern part of [B] Colorado, an area called the San Juan Wilderness Area.
And we rode about [D#] Durango up across the continental [Em] divide,
[D] spent about five days out in the wilderness, camping out, getting rained on [C#] and snowed on
and telling lies and stories.
It was just a great, great time [C] for me and filled a truly a deep, empty place that had built up in my heart.
One of the wonderful things [D] that happened on this journey is I met a fellow named Dick Spencer,
[A] who happens to be probably [G] the finest storyteller in the world.
And he [F#] also, like my son Zachary, is half-blooded Indian, and he knows three Indian dialects.
Now the thing [D#] about all the tribes in the United [E] States, all the different Indian tribes,
and even within some tribes, the different [F#] families here and there, they all had different languages.
But when they met one another out in the wilderness someplace, they could communicate by sign language.
And Dick taught me some sign language, and [A] the most specific way that I can share it with you
is one of the things that he taught me, which was the Lord's [F#] Prayer.
Our.
[G] All of [A] us.
Starting like this, and all of us.
Our [Dm] Father.
The mother is with the breast.
[D#] Our Father.
[E]
Which art?
[F#] Which one?
Which art in heaven?
Hallowed.
[D] They didn't really have a [D#] word for holy, but it was like the spirit, the mind meeting the [F#] spirit.
Hallowed be thy name.
How are you called?
Watatashay.
Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom.
Now they didn't have a word for kingdom, so what that became was sort of like holy teepee.
Thy kingdom come.
[D#] Thy will.
They didn't have a word for will, so it was [N] thy way.
Thy way be done.
I like that.
All of us.
[Em] On earth, the same [F#] as it is in heaven.
[N] Give us.
Give us this day our daily bread.
Adding the loaves, huh?
And forgive us our trespasses.
They didn't have a word really for trespasses or sins or like that, so it was like people who steal, take from you under the cover of night.
Forgive us our trespasses the same as we forgive those who trespass against us.
[F#] [N] And lead us not into temptation.
[B]
[G] Can't say it this way.
I don't know [A] why.
[N]
Lead us not into temptation, [D] but deliver us [F#]
from evil.
[C] And evil you cast [Dm] forcefully away.
[C#] Don't throw it behind you.
[B] Dick was very specific about that.
I don't know what that means, but it doesn't go with a prayer.
[E] Evil for [C]
thine is the [G] kingdom and the power.
The same everywhere and all.
[D] And the [F#] glory forever is the sun rolling across the sky.
Amen.
[N]
