Just A Closer Walk With Thee - left hand bluegrass technique chords
Start Jamming...
OK, today we've got a song that many of you are already trying.
A song called Just a Closer Walk with Thee.
But several people have asked if I can do a little bit more on the left hand technique.
So, here we go.
[A] [D]
[G]
[C]
[D]
[E] [G]
[A] [Am]
[C]
[G]
[D] [G]
Let's [D] slow it right down and take a closer look at the left hand.
This is how it begins.
[Bb] [Bm]
[C] [Db] [D]
[G]
[Em] [D] [Db]
[C]
[G] [D]
[G]
[B] Let's start that again, even slower.
[Bb] [Bm] [C]
[D]
Now, we're trying to get to that note.
We've got a D string playing and on the A string I've got the 5th fret.
So both notes are the note D and they're ringing together.
Something we find quite [Dm] commonly on a banjo.
But on the guitar it's not quite so common.
It gives a really nice effect.
Let's hear it again.
[Bbm] [Bm]
[C] [D]
[Bm]
[D] [C]
[G] [A]
[D]
[E] [D]
[G]
[Em] [A]
[Em]
Now, I hope you notice the hammer-ons and pull-offs.
They're what make this song as effective as it is.
[Bm] [C] [A]
[G]
[C] Now, here we go.
[Am] [C]
[D]
[G]
[Db]
[D] [G]
[Bb] [B]
[Em] [Am]
[B] [Am]
[C]
[G]
[Dm]
[G]
From the beginning [Bm] again.
[C] [A] [G]
[Gbm] [C]
[Em] [D]
[Em] [G]
[D] [B]
[Bb] [Am] [Em]
[Am] [A] [Am]
[C]
[D] [G]
[D]
[E] [G]
That ending [E] is
[A] [G]
You could change it to something like [D] this.
[A]
[Bb] [G] [E]
[G]
Very slowly.
[D]
[Bb] [B] [G]
[A]
[G]
[Bm]
[D] [G]
[Bm]
[D] [C]
[G] [D]
[G]
[Bm]
[Em] [A]
[Bbm] [Am]
[A]
[C]
[D] [G]
[D]
[A] [G]
[E]
[G]
Now, just something about the right hand.
About the use of the plectrum.
On the main beats we have a downstroke and on the [Am] [Bb] offbeats we have an upstroke.
Have a look at the beginning.
[Bm] [C] [Db] [D]
[Bm]
[D] [C]
[A] [C] [G]
[D] [Em] So, most of the strokes I'm playing are downstrokes.
There's a down-up effect when I'm playing [C] chords.
[E] But the main notes, because most of the main notes land on the actual beat,
they're played on the upstroke.
And the main notes are played with a downstroke.
[Bb] [Bm] [A]
[D] [G]
Let's move very slowly.
[Bm]
[D]
[G]
[Em] [Bm]
[C]
[G]
And halfway through, [Bb] [A]
[Bm] [E]
[D] [Bb]
[Bm] [E] [D] [A]
[Bm] [Em]
all slightly different.
To be honest, I can't remember exactly what I play, so it's slightly different [E] each time.
[B]
[Em]
[Am] [G] [Am]
[A] [Am] [A] [E]
[D]
[G]
[D]
[A] [G]

[D] [G]
[C]
