It's a [Em] lifetime ago isn't it?
When I [G] had a call from a [N] keyboard player called Mike Pinder. _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ He's my father's new band.
I _ was trying [C] to get them to persuade them to do my songs.
[E] They came.

And it was a curious [G] thing for me.
I've never been in a group.
[F] I've been in lots of groups when I was [E] a kid.
[F] But never in a group with personalities that strong.
[G] _ _ [Gm] Some people in those first few years coming forward.
Other people retreating out the back door almost.
Into the [F] darkness.
It's a curious thing. _
[D] But we were never personalities or celebrities.
And it was a very long slow success story for the Moody's.
And I don't think we ever really thought we made it.
_ Until [C] there was one moment in [G] _ _ [Eb] 1973.
We did Madison Square [C] Garden twice in [G] the same day.
[Fm] And they [E] gave us the golden ticket award for [Gb] selling more [G] tickets than anybody [N] else.

_ _ _ [C] Between shows.
Rex Homerson, our flute player and myself.
We went out onto the street.
[G] _ _ And we [G] looked up and saw our name. _
In 50 foot high letters.
And we said [B] to each other.
We made it. _ _ _
_ Because we've been everybody's support band for years.
We supported a group called Can't Eat on our [Fm] first tour.
They were [Em] very kind to us.
We [N] opened up for the cream on their farewell _ tour.
_ [F] And I know that they needed to say farewell [Eb] to each other. _
[Em] _ _ [G] _ But I often [Gm] wonder about that day.
Ray [Fm] _
and I that day had some money [C] in our pockets when we [F] walked out on the street between shows.
And we [Em] bought a load of tickets [F] off _ _ [D] a ticket type of scalper.
And [C] we just gave them away [F] to people. _
And I often wonder whether those people when they got inside the gig.
[Gb] _ [G] They must have thought, oh those are the true heroes. _ _ _
_ _ [F] _ _ [C] _ _
_ [D] But those [Gm] years were a difficult time [G] for me.
I was losing people.
That window [E] wasn't there for me anymore.
[F] _ [G] And I was handling a lot of grief as a young.
[C] _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ [Em] But anyway I [Bb] wrote a lot of things in those [G] days that I never really questioned.
Just came [F] straight from the heart.
The other guys were [E] expecting me to have something to kick off an album.
And I put the [E] ball down the pitch with it. _
And I'd like to be one of those [Eb] songs.
