[Am] [C] So, I thought I'd go ahead and do a couple quick tip videos for you.
I've been working on the Pat Martino course for everybody.
So in the meantime, I'm just going to do some [G] shorter videos to kind of keep things going here.
I thought I'd do a lesson on Pat Metheny's augmented triad usage.
I know everyone does that wide intervallic lick that he always plays, and I do know that
one too, but I tend not to even really play it just because it's so much a part of his
vocabulary and it's one of his cliches.
I kind of feel like when you play it, you're just really lifting his style too much at that point.
Anyway, so what I've notated here is a side slip augmented triad lick that I think I first
discovered in the solo over F major, but I've transposed it to C.
And so, it's a chromatic lick using augmented triads, and I'm going to tell you something
about it that a lot of people may not want to hear, but with a lot of Pat Metheny's playing,
there isn't really a lot of rhyme or reason.
That's just a fact.
I mean, you can come up with all the theories you want about this, but it's just basically
what it is.
It's just a bunch of chromatic augmented triads, and that's it.
And there isn't really any particular theory that you can sort of use to justify this level
of outside playing.
Of course, he knows what he's doing.
He obviously hears it because he resolves this kind of thing.
So what I've kind of done here is it's sort of a hybrid between two Pat Metheny licks.
The first bar is verbatim the augmented triad lick that he plays, and then the second bar
is another kind of idea where you're enclosing an A flat augmented triad over a C major 7th.
And I guess you could sort of have these little theories about, oh, it's harmonic major or
whatever, but to me, it's just a series of augmented triads that resolve into a C major
7th, and I think it sounds cool, and I thought I would show it to you.
So I'm just going to show you the lick first.
I'll show you slow, and then I'll speed it up a little bit.

[Am] [C]
[A] [Bb] [Am] [C]
[G] All right, so now I want to show you the lick in context.
So I'm going to use Green Dolphin Street as an example, you know, because you got the
two bars of C major 7th at the beginning.
So I'll play one A section through, like really, really straight ahead, and then on the beginning
of the second one, I'll insert the lick so you can kind of hear it in context, because
I think it's really important to establish inside harmony before you get to outside.
So [A] let's take a listen to that.

If anyone learns it and manages to insert it into a solo or writes some variations on
it, I'd love to hear it.
So let me know what you guys think, and I'll be back soon with another lesson.
Thanks.
