Hey what's up guys, this is JJ and this is one of my favorite tunes of the moment,
When My Train Pulls In by the brilliant Gary Clark Jr.
One of the coolest blues kind of artists of the day.
I'm playing a Vox Humana mod at Tele Thinline with Seymour Duncan P-Rails pickups.
I've selected the bridge pickup in P90 mode.
Gary Clark Jr.
plays an Epiphone Riviera which also has P90 pickups and is also a semi-hollow platform.
I'm going into a Vox AC-15 on the normal channel with kind of a break up sound.
Here's that basic amplifier sound.
I'm using a little bit of a starving fuzz tone courtesy of the Magnetic Effects White Atom.
An English fuzz, a germanium silicon hybrid fuzz that has a very cool texture control.
You can use that to set it for more of a starving sound.
Which is something that Gary Clark Jr.
uses a lot and I really like that cheesy old farty fuzz tone.
For explaining how you play it I'll turn the fuzz off and I'll just show you how to play it.
The main riff is based around the E minor pentatonic in the open position.
So that's this little [G] scale.
[A]
[D] [E] You start off like this.
Open A, 2nd fret on the A string [A] and then open [D] D.
[A] [D] [C]
[Ab] Then you play open A, 2nd fret on [A] the A string [B] again.
[Cm] So then you get [A] this together.
[D] [B] [D] [B]
[D] Remember to [C] mute the D string whenever you go back to the A [D] string.
[B] Then [G] you play a 3rd fret on the E string with a slight bend.
[A] [D] [G] [D] [G]
Then you play an E on the D string but you hammer on from open D to E.
So you [D] play open D, [E] 2nd fret on the D string.
[E]
[A] [D] [G] [E] Then you leave the low E string, you leave that ringing and you play this thick octave.
[D] [G]
[E] [D] [G] [E]
[Bm] Slowly.
[G] [E] [B]
[D] [G] [E] That's the main [Gb] riff.
To add more girth to that sound instead of the octave you can also play a power chord [D] like this.
[E]
As soon as you go to the 4 chord, this is a 12 bar blues progression,
you play an A minor and I play it like this.
I play the E string 5th fret, I mute the A string and then I play 5th fret on the D string and 5th fret on the G string.
I leave the [Am] other two, the B and the E strings ringing.
So like this.
[Em] I'm not sure if this is the exact same chord voicing that Gary Clark Jr.
uses but I think it sounds close enough.
And the guitar parts are layered [Ab] on the recording [Am] as well.
[Bm] [G] [E] [D] [Em]
[E] [Bm] [G] [N] And then when you go to the B chord, the 5th chord, I play the same voicing but now 2 frets higher for a B minor.
That's 7th fret on the E string, 7th fret on the D string, [Ab] 7th fret on the G string and then I [Bm] leave these two ringing.
Slide back to [Am] the A minor.
[D] [G] [E] Up on the riff again.
I love this riff.
I hope you liked this little tutorial.
If you did, please give it a thumbs up.
