What I like without you around
My words don't want my bed in the ground
And though I'm [E] a philippie
I do [Bm] the ground rules
What'll I [D] do without you?
[C] What'll I do [D] without you to talk to?
No one to serve up, I'll leave the ball to
You [C] write the work, but [D] I'll miss the ballroom
What'll I say without you?
[Am] Oh, I [A] don't know what
to do with myself Now there's
A lot [G] of the songs on the record have references to places
and [C] being away
[G] physically being far away from people
So I wrote quite a few of them
when I was away and then
when I came back I took pretty much a year
off just to think
about my feelings
I write songs with them
What'll [C] I do when you've gone away?
Once [Dm] I had [C] five
songs to do
[D] [C] we came down to
[F] Baltimore here, Baltimore Miss Cork
Some of [B] them I had an idea
of what to do but most of them
we [F] were just sitting in a room
figuring them out
[G#m] working all day at [B] all night
and just falling into bed
with my [Fm] headphones on listening to what we'd done
[G#m] I like the idea of coming [Em] here
and sort of all [F] being
stuck in the same
[Am] in the same [A] hole together and be
it's [G#] a pretty nice hole
[Dm] You never
[F] have [E] nowhere
[F] to go
One [Am] [E] [G] [F] song
Nowhere to [A] go
I [E] was finishing it while I was here
and we just sat out [Dm] in the grass one day
and I said I think I finished that song
I was noodling
and [G] we recorded it that morning [F] I think
sort of really [Dm] trying to get a shape to the song
[Em] that didn't have any shape before
it was just like a vocal [Dm] line
and then really sort of [Am] simple
accompaniment
[C] [G]
[Am] [C]
[G] [Am] We were in Wales
for a week, [G] we arrived over on
the boat, got the boat to Hollyhead, drove
[F] 20 minutes to Brinderwen
[Em] Such a beautiful
sort of converted farmhouse
in a national park, [A] absolutely gorgeous
just a [G] much more relaxed experience
because we'd done a lot of preparatory work
and [F] Joe Henry is such a calming
presence, he's [Am] a southern gent
[F#] I'd like a chair with a bit of stool wouldn't [G] you?
I'm sure you would Yeah
[E]
[C] We were [E]
[G#] recording everything
live so everyone was in [F#] the room together
The first record I [G] wasn't really good
enough at the guitar to be able to [F#] play
with everybody and not mess it up
because of the way we'd rehearsed this record
it was much more [G] of a live thing
and you know, [Am] sink or swim really
and so by [D] the time we got to actually
recording I [C] felt confident
in [F#m] being able to do [E] that
and so did [C] everybody, everybody felt
that they were sort of
ready to really
put [Em] it down
[Am] [A]
[G] [Em] Ross Turner's [E] playing drums
and [G] he always
is just so tasteful
[E] Lucy Wilkins played on the first
record but [A] on this record she's much [G] more involved, she
arranged [C] all of the strings
we had one day of opera dubbing in the church studios
in [G] London and
Lucy was 8 and a [A] half months pregnant
at the time and she did
[G] say at the end of the day
the baby has turned, the baby has [C] changed position now
from all of the
[A] sort of arduous stringing
[D] that [Em] she was doing and then the baby
arrived a week later
[C]
[F] [D]
[G] Gavin Glass
has a much more [E] prominent
role in this record as well on the first record
he came in and played [N] piano on a couple
of songs whereas this one
he was at the forefront of arranging
all the songs and
he's such a wonderful player and he
plays piano and Rhodes and banjo
and just everything that was recorded
he can and does play on the record
Please welcome Lisa Hannigan
Yeah!
[C]
[Em] So far from home
[A] The album was done and [G] the
[A] artwork was done or was being [G] done
and just I really felt
it was [C] important for us to get out and play
for people and really
kind of find where
the songs were going to sit
[D] [C]
[Am] [Em]
[C]
We did three
months of touring
[D] and
straight [C] away the new songs really seemed [Em] to
resonate at the gigs
I started off doing
half and half in the [G] set list
and then it's gradually [Am] become
more of the [D] new songs, I mean that's partly down to us
[C] obviously wanting to play the new songs
more but I really think that
they're much more immediate and
stand up a bit more
[Em] Never a falling
[E] Flake of snow
[Am] I saw Gavin
[G]
[Am] Over [G] whispering Me spinning Me
[C]
Well with the artwork, when I
getting all
the lyrics together [A] it seemed like
[G] I mean there was a lot of
references to travelling and being away and [C] being
all over the world and yet still very rooted
in home [Am] and places
and people and time that
you know was [G] past
So I wanted to do something on maps
[C] So
I
did like a situationalist [F#] map
sort of a cultural map which is
[C] the places that are most important to you
The front cover
[Em] is the three main [Dm] places that I wrote the record
[Em] I'm really excited
about all of [A] the songs in the record
and I notice that you know
when I'm doing a gig and looking
at the set list and
you know there's no song that I go
ah, when I see it coming up
when I see it looming
you know so I think that's a really good sign
