I said, sure.
What are we going to do?
He said, we're going to cut one of your songs
and I don't care [D] which one.
I got to tell you, I've been writing songs a long time.
I've been writing [Eb] songs so long, they stuck me in this [Fm] Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame
over here a couple of years [C] back.
[D] Nobody ever said [F] that to me before.
I'm going to cut one
of your songs and I don't [C] care which one.
That's a mighty, mighty nice [Db] thing to hear
from [Gb] anybody.
[D]
So I [F] was feeling pretty good about myself and I went over to the studio
the next day and [G]
[Bb] I figured it was going to be kind of a big [E] deal.
It's a Kenny [N] Chesney
album.
I went in there and there weren't many folks there.
It was just my buddy Eric Darkin
[D] beating on a wooden box with Kenny and Bud Cannon as producer.
I said, well, [F] I guess
it's not going to be that big a [D] deal after all.
I walked in and Kenny said, man, what
do you want to sing?
I know a whole bunch of your songs.
[N] I said, it don't matter to
me.
I know a whole bunch of my songs too.
[F] [C]
He said, well, I don't have any kids of my
own, but if I did, I think I'd want to tell my kids what you said to [E] your kids in that
song down [Eb] the road.
He said, why don't we sing that [Fm] and we'll [Bb] [Dm]
make it a duet.
You [F] sing
the second verse.
[Bb]
So we did.
We played it about three times in the [F] studio.
Went home
and that was that.
And I [D] remember drying away that day, you know, thinking that sounds pretty
good.
I think if it didn't have me on it, it might [F] be a hit.
[C] Turns [Dm] out I seriously underestimated
the star power of Kenny Chesney.
He was able to have a hit [Ebm] even with me [Am] on it.
Drove [Dm] me
all the way up the charts like an [G] ankle weight.
[Bb]
[F] [D] And we had a number one and we had a Grammy
nomination and good things happened from it.
And it's good people.
But my favorite [Dbm] thing
about this song is still the way I felt [B] in the portal swing, [Ab]
[Gb] Christmas, a long time ago,
thinking about thinking about [D] family down the road.

[Dm] Mama [F] wants to know [Bb] what's in the blood [F] just in the [C] water.
[Dm] Daddy [F] wants to know that I [Bb] make
enough to [F] take his [C] [Bb] down.
[Am]
[Bb] Oh, he [F] can let it [Bb] go.
[C]
Oh, [F]
[Bb]
[C] [Bb] [F]

[C] [Bb] [F]
now down the street from here, [Bb] there's an [F] engineer with the only son.
And now baby
girl says [Bb] she is the [F] only [C] [Bb] one down [C] the road.
[Dm] Mama [F] wants to know is it [C] washed in the blood
just in the water.
[D] And [F] I want to know that he [Bb] makes enough to [F] take my [C] daughter.
[Bb] [Am]
When [Bb] it [C] comes [F] time to go [Bb] down, [C] [F]
down, [Bb]
[C] [Bb] you know, I'm gonna help her go down [F] the road.
[Bb] Down, [C]
down, down, [F] down the road.
