This whole thing has to do with taking pride in what you do [F] for a living.
It took me a long [C] time to figure that out.
I have one [Fm] of the best jobs in the world.
I do my [D] favorite thing on earth for a job.
[Ab] What a lucky [Eb] man I am.
And [F]
[C] I
[Eb] hope for you [G] guys that you get to feel that or that you already do.
But the fact of the matter is, most [D] people in [Fm] the world have jobs [G] that suck.
[N]
[Eb] And I had some of those jobs.
I wrote this [Fm] song.
I was working on the highway in North Mississippi in [Bb] the middle of summer.
[F]
[C] [F] And it sucked.
[Bb] [C]
[D] My first day on the job, I wore [Db] some Converse [E] tennis shoes and they melted off my [Ebm] feet before [C] lunchtime.
It was [F] hot.
[Am]
[Em] But I figured out on that job that [F] it doesn't matter if you have [B] one of those jobs that suck.
If you do your best, if [Gb] you do the best you can do, at the very least, it's a shorter [F] path [B] toward a job [N] that sucks less.
[B] I realize I'm never going to make it as a [Abm] motivational speaker.
[Ab]
[B] But in the [F] job category, sucking less is a bigger [Cm] deal than you might think.
[Bb] And so I wrote [Em] this song and [F] tried to do my [Ab] best.
And I reminded [Ebm] myself of it and I put it on [F] one of my little CDs.
And a couple [G] of thousand of my friends [Dbm] and family bought the [Ebm] CD and were [D] deeply moved by the message of the song.
[Dm]
[Gb] One of those [F] friends was Jimmy Buffett.
[Bb] [C] And he put it on one of [Ab] his CDs and three [F] quarters of a million of his [Dm] friends and family [Bb]
[C] were [G] all deeply moved by the message of [D] the song.
[F]
[G] And you'd [Db] think that I would be content with that, but no, [Ab] no I'm not.
[G]
[Bb] Until I can get Protestants [Gb] and Catholics and Democrats and Republicans and wrestlers and boxers to all kind of hold hands and sing this thing [Eb] like we are the world,
I'm just going to have to go around one cave at [G] a time [N]
and let people know that it's my job.

Street sweeper [F] came whistling by, he [Ab] was bouncing every [C] step.
It [Dm] seemed strange how [G] good he felt, [C] so I asked him why he sweat.
He said [Fm] it's my job [C] [Gm] to be clean at this [F] mess, a mess of the [D] beast, a [C] grove full of beasts.
It's my job [Gm] to be better than the [Am] best and that [G] makes the day unique.
[F] [Gm]
Got an uncle [F] that owns a bank, he's [Eb] a self-made millionaire.
[Bb] Never had anyone [G] to thank and [Eb] had no one to care.
[G]
It always seemed [F] kind of sad to me and I asked him why [Cm] that [G]
was.
[C] And he told [G] me it's because in [C] my contract there's this clause that says it's my job [Gm] to be worried after [Am] death.
And that's [Bb] the thing that [G] people [C] respect in me, it's my job.
[E]
But [Gm] without it I'd be [G] less than what I expect from me.
[F]
[Bb] [F] [Bb]
[Gm]
[C] [F] [Gm] I've been lazy [G] most all my life, [Ab] writing songs and sleeping late.
[Eb]
[Bb] And any time you [C] will ever [G] ask, honey, [Eb] what's purely by [G] mistake.
Street sweepers [F] can smile when I've got [Eb] no right to feel [C] upset.
But [Dm] sometimes I [G] still forget.
Till [Gm] the lights go on [G] and the stage is set and [Gm] the [G] song is on.
You feel that [C] sweat, it's my job [E] [Gm] to be different than the rest.
[Am] That's [Gm] another reason to go far more.
[C] It's my job to [Gm] be better than the [Am] rest.
[C] That's the trouble of the [F] night.
It's my job [E] to [Gm] be clean at this mess.
[Am] And that's [Bb] another reason to [Gm] go [C] far more.
It's my job [E] [Gm] to be better than the rest.
[Dm] And [Bb] that's the reason.

[F]
