What's up, welcome back to the channel, my name is Simon Serena.
So Drake just released an album, so today we are making a beat inspired by Scorpion.
[G] So while I was listening to that album, I noticed that Drake had a couple [G#] mid-tempo
soul sample [N] songs like 8for10, Emotionless, Sandra's Rose, and personally I've never
made a beat like that, so I thought that would be a fun challenge.
So obviously those beats use a sample, I don't have a sample, let's make a sample.
So first I'm gonna lay down some chords with the [F] organ.
[Em]
[E] [Am]
[F] [E]
[Am] [A]
[G#] Now I'm gonna put in a piano, and we're gonna do everything on the same pattern,
so we can export [F] it later.
[Em] [E]
[Am] [F]
[E] [Am]
[A] Now I'm gonna draw in some [F] strings, [Em] and then [Fm] I'm gonna do a [G] roll here, [F#] just like this.
[E] And then [F#] let's do that in octaves, let's do harmony, and we'll do another roll.
[Em] This one can go there, this one [A#] there, like this.
[G] What I'm doing right now is drawing automation for the modulation wheel,
just kind of [F] smoothing it out right now.
Okay, so here we go.
[G] [Em]
[E] [Am]
[F] [G] [E]
Man, when the [Am] beat comes in here, I'm gonna go.
[F] And the last thing I'm gonna add is some brass.
[Em] [E]
[Am] [A] So now that we have the whole sample, all I'm gonna do is export it to an audio file,
and I'm gonna put some isotope vinyl [G] on it so it sounds a bit more old school.
[F#m]
[A#m] [G] So this sample fills up a lot of space, so all we need is a bassline and some drums.
For the bass I copied that piano melody.
[F#m]
[A#] [F#] Now all we need are some simple hard-hitting drums.
[B]
[Dm] I didn't want to make the sample too repetitive, so I made a quick little turnaround.
[E] [Am] [Dm] So I'm gonna export this as well, and we're gonna put this at the end of every chorus.
[E]
[G] [A] [F#m]
[A#m] So I have an idea for the verse.
I'm gonna [D#] duplicate the sample and I'm gonna bring [G] it down to one octave.
So we have this.
[F#m] And [Fm] then I'm gonna EQ it, [Cm] [D#] so that [Gm] we get rid of the money [Bm] frequencies at the bottom.
And then when the chorus comes back in, it [B] feels nice and big.
So I just [F#] recorded some vocals to give the sample a more authentic quality,
and I'm just gonna leave this in the chorus.
So the thing about vocals is I didn't [D#] want it to sound distinguishable,
so I'm pretty much just saying I the man.
I [G] also raised these vocals up two semitones as well.
[F#m] [Dm]
[E] [Dm] Good.
[E] Can we get into it?
[G]
[F#m] [G] Thumbs, and then we cut off you.
[Cm] [D#] [Bm] And you.
[G] [F#] Okay, I'm gonna arrange the rest on [D#] my own, [Dm] and
[E] [Dm]
[E] [G]
[F#m] [A#m] [F#]
[Bm] [G]
[F#] [Bm]
[B] [G]
