_ _ _ It was one of the most powerful and romantic songs of the decade.
Show Me Heaven peaked at the top of the UK charts in 1990
and provided the [G] perfect soundtrack for Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman in Days of Thunder.
Well now the singer behind that song is putting her powerful voice behind a new project.
_ [Db] _ It's the movie that brought Tom Cruise [G] and Nicole [Bb] Kidman together.
I thought you weren't going to watch. _
_ _ [C] _ Not only did Days of Thunders get our hearts racing,
[Ab] it also delivered one of the [Bbm] best movie soundtracks [Db] of the 90s.
_ _ [Eb] _
_ _ _ [Ab] _ _ _ _ [Db] _
_ _ The film's theme song, [Eb] Show Me Heaven, became [Ab] one of the most famous [Bbm] and romantic ballads [Db] of the decade.
_ _ _ [Eb] _
_ _ _ [Ab] _ _ _ _ _
[Db] The song by Maria McKee [Eb] topped the UK charts in [C] 1990
[Dbm] and set the singer up for a career in the spotlight.
I do [E] more to make [A] you smile, _ _ come to [Am] me child. _ _ _
_ [E] _ _ _ _ These days, McKee has swapped the recording studio for film,
spending time both behind and in front of the [Gm] camera. _
And Maria McKee joins us now live [Eb] from Los Angeles.
Welcome to the show, [G] good to have you with us.
Now Show Me Heaven, oh it's a [Dm] pleasure.
That was actually, [Eb] there's quite an interesting story behind this song
[E] and apparently you were asked to originally record something different
and then you [N] said no I don't want to do it and they gave you 24 hours to go away and write a new song.
What happened? _
No, [Ebm] the melody was great, _ [G] but the lyrics were [Db] appalling.
It was something like, secret [Cm] fire, take me higher, [G] my desire, you know.
_ [Db] And [G] I said I can't sing those words, [Ab] please give me a shot at [Db] writing new lyrics.
_ And they [Ab] basically [Eb] said, okay well you have [Ab] 24 hours and if we don't approve,
you're going to have [Db] to sing secret fire, take me higher, my desire.
[Ab] _ [Eb] _ So [Ab] _ I went away, I was [Bbm] living in [Db] Ireland at the time and _ I [Eb] furiously wrote those [Ab] lyrics out.
_ [Bb] And [Db] they said, oh yeah, cool, okay, [Eb] good enough, Show Me Heaven. _
[Ab] _ It [Db] has a very 90s music video, sweeping cameras, [Eb] wind machines, [G] was it fun to make the clip?
_ Oh [F] yeah, it was great.
It [G] was a really magical time in my life.
[Em] I was living over in Ireland _ and [Eb] _ _ going on top of the pops, [Fm] it was a dream come true.
[Db] I was very young _ and it was a blast.
[Eb] It was a really [Ab] great time to be [Db] _ out there singing.
Is it true that for [Ab] 16 years you [Eb] didn't sing the [Ab] song?
_ _ _ You know, I [Db] didn't sing it live as much because [Eb] I started out in a [Ab] rock band when I was a [Db] teenager.
It was a sort of a post-punk, alternative [Eb] country _ band.
[Ab] And then I had a solo career as a singer-songwriter.
[Db] _
_ And my [Eb] fans didn't really [Ab] expect to hear a big sort of power ballad in the set.
They wanted to hear my original album [Eb] material.
[Ab] So I was very responsible to [Db] my fans at the time.
[Eb] I _ [Ab] would _ trot it out occasionally _ _ [Fm]
for one-offs, TV shows and stuff like [Db] that.
But it wasn't really a part of my live show. _
[Cm] _ And then when [Ab] I performed at Gay Pride in Dublin about [Db] six or seven years ago and they [Eb] asked me to sing it.
I [Ab] think that was the first time I brought it back [Bbm] out and now [Db] I've been singing it ever since.
Hey, Maria, [Eb] do you think that the [Ab] big power ballads are missing from films and soundtracks these [Eb] days?
I _ _ don't know if they're missing.
I [G] just think tastes have changed.
_ _ It's very much a sound of a certain era.
_ [Eb] _ _ _ _
And [G] it was great then and [Db] it's fun for [G]
a nostalgic kick.
_ To listen to that, it takes you right back to that time, to [Eb] that era.
Yeah, [G]
absolutely.
It takes you back instantly, doesn't it?
The 90s. _
You are now starring and working on some independent films.
What do you prefer, in front of the camera [N] or behind the microphone? _ _ _
_ Well, my _ husband and I, _ _ he's a filmmaker [G] and so we work together producing these small films that we make in our studio in L.A.
[E] And _ music is very much a part [D] of the filmmaking.
_ _ The [G] films are very music-driven and I sing sometimes [A] actually on screen in the films.
_ So I get to [D] do a bit of both [C] and I think it would be [Ab] a shame [G] not to.
_ However, the film that we're working on now, he's written for [N] me and it's a non-singing role.
_ And so far I haven't sung on film at [G] all in it yet.
So who knows?
It _ might be, you know, _ my fans will just have to be satisfied to hear me talk.
Or maybe you could go back to the_
I don't know.
They're going to react to that.
_ Go back to the post-punk or country stuff, Maria.
That's what it sounds like, a really cool sound.
Maria, thank you so much for sharing your memories with us today.
Thank you so [N] much.
This was great.
_ Talk to you again.
Thanks, Maria.
_ Okay.
