Start Jamming...
I started off with a flat pick, the same way as most guitar players do.
A little peck drum, you know, or a flat pick, whatever you want to call it.
[D]
And I still do use a flat pick for a lot of recording
rivet parts for the acoustic [G] guitar.
You know, you just
I haven't got one, but it's
You know, it's
[C] just
[D]
[Gm] [Bm] Whatever you're doing, and it's [Ebm] important to me,
because you get a better signal, that's what I'm trying to say.
When you do it with your [E] fingers, you get a clear, big sound,
and it's generally speaking probably better than the way I
[D]
[Eb]
do a basic finger pick.
[D] And, you know, it begins when you start yourself,
you're doing pretty slow, two to the bar, or
One to the bar kind of [G] sound.
Once you build it up, you get to a
You get to a [Ab] four to the bar, where
[C]
[Abm]
[D] [C]
the
That's four beats to the bar, you know, and then
And then you've
The [Ab] fingers
You make the fingers start to go in like the little holes in between there.
[C]
And then, once you got that off,
[Bb] it's difficult, I mean, you
[C]
[G]
think
So, you're just sort of picking around still.
[Ebm]
You know, you may change the [A] thumbs
[D]
[G]
[Eb] [D]
[Gm] [D] [A]
[G] and all that.
So, and then it's more like piano playing,
you start to get a little more
Once you start picking, you start to do, you [Eb] know
[E]
[Gb] [A] [Eb]
[A] [G] [Gb] [Bm]
[Am] [G]
[A] [G] [D] [G] [A]
[D] [A] [E] You [Ab] [Am] know
[D] [E] [Ab] [Am] And
[D] [C] [G]
[D] so, [Ab] it's like a
A little stride piano kind of style.
Then back through ragtime, western swing and all that.
And then slowly, you have to start breaking the rules,
where my thumb has started creeping up to the top strings,
and fingers down to the [Gm] bottom,
so that
[D] [G] the [N] fingers don't fall over the whole thing,
instead of just sticking to the, you know
And so, [B] it's just the flat picking style
and the finger picking style, you know,
sort of start fusing together.
And it's sort of just really a bit of a mishmash.
[Bb] [D]
[A]
I just play [G] very simple music.
But
[Ab] And when I was 15 and heard people like Ken Atkins,
I just thought, well, forget it.
It's another planet.
It'll never happen.
[N] So, don't even try.
But you get up into that picking area.
I mean, it never did.
But, you know, you get to places without really realizing.
It's just a slow business.
You just creep forward very slowly.
You know, if I was to ask them,
do you ever get tired of what you're doing?
And the answer is, it's just that you are where you are.
It's different to you.
You're actually moving forward very slowly.
Really structured and prepped.
I don't know what else, you know.
If I've got a film to do, it's better.
Because I mean, I have to go down there.
So, that's probably better for me to have something to do.
But what I really, really need,
what I should have, is somebody that makes me do it.
Well, you know, somebody who really knows what I want.
Come and tell me.
Give me some exercise.
[Ab] Because it just keeps the thing alive.
My way is, you know, you
A little peck drum, you know, or a flat pick, whatever you want to call it.
