Maxon SD-9 Sonic Distortion Demo with Dani Rabin from Marbin chords
Start Jamming...
Hello everybody, I'm Danny Rabin, guitarist for Marbin.
I'm here to talk to you about the
SD9 by Maxon.
Awesome, awesome, awesome distortion pedal.
It's the high gain sound for every Marbin
song, every Marbin performance.
I just use it all the time.
Let me talk about my settings real
quick.
They're always the same.
I never change them.
So level all the way up, crucial.
Gain is
around two o'clock and then I have the tone knob almost closed.
It's like on one just to get enough
brightness in, but it's a very bright pedal so you want to close it.
Let's talk about the amp.
You're going to hear it through.
So for you Fender players, my clean channel, this guy
is a lot like a super reverb, maybe even like a twin.
Slightly gritty but very open and if you're
if you're planning on running this pedal in front of a clean amp, this is going to give you an idea
of what it's going to sound like.
This channel, the dirty channel is more marshally, more grainy,
higher gain.
So if you're going to run it dirty and then use a pedal to break through
and kind of compress the sound, then you're going to want to listen to that more carefully.
All right, so let me give you an idea of what these channels sound like.
So the clean channel,
clean.
Oh by the way, I'm using reverb and delay in the effects loop.
So this is channel one.
[Gm] [Am]
[C] [Am]
Slightly gritty, not really distorted, but I'm playing kind of hard so I'm pushing it.
Channel [B] two without the pedal, [Em] [C]
[G] [D]
[C#] [G] more [Bm] compressed, more low mids.
All right, let's get this thing
fired up and you'll see what it sounds like.
Okay, so here's the clean channel with the pedal on.
[G]
[Gm] [E]
[G] [A]
[Gm] [A#] [G]
[D] [A]
[E]
[Dm] [B] [Gm] [G]
[A]
[D] [E]
All right, so that's the clean channel.
It's not very clean, it gets really, really, really distorted
in [F#] an awesome way.
It's not too compressed either.
So when I go to the other channel,
it gets a little bit less rock and roll and more, I guess, fusion-y or metal even.
So this is a lot of gain.
Dirty channel with this engaged.
[G]
[A#] [A] [Gm]
[A] [Em] [D]
[G]
[D]
[Gm]
[A]
[D] [G]
So the other thing that's cool about this pedal is that it cleans up nicely.
So I'm going to put
a bigger reverb on and I have a loop that's just a pad for like [B] an E chord.
And then you can get a
real Jeff Beck kind of sound happening.
Very like [G#] delicate but [B] smooth and sustaining guitar.
[E]
[B] [A]
[B] [E]
[Em] [E]
[Em]
[A] [B]
[E]
Now another thing I do a lot with Marvin is like songs like African Chopdive, you guys know that,
we use a synth patch and I always run this pedal with it to give it more sustain, more bite.
So the clean channel with it sounds like this.
So I'm going to put a little bit more reverb on
and it sounds like this.
[Bm] [E] [G]
[B] [E]
[C] [Am] [F#]
[Em] Dirty [A] channel sounds [E] like this.
[F#]
[G#]
[C#]
[E] [C]
[F] So I really recommend that you go out and buy this pedal.
It's not expensive, it's the best
high gain sound I've heard.
And if you have either a clean amp or a dirty amp, it doesn't matter.
This thing does wonders, gives you the sustain you need.
Highly recommended.
Thank you guys so
very much.
