[N] [B] Johnny Horton, country and pop [Gbm] rock giant, fatally injured in a head-on collision [A] in Texas.
A [B] week before it happened, Johnny had told his friend [C] Merle Kilgore that he knew it [Ab] was coming.
He came to see me and [G] he says, I got a present for you.
[Am] I said, what is it?
He says, I know you've always admired my guitar.
I said, I want [Gb] you to have it.
[Am] It was a special made guitar made in Canada, and it was all fancy [D] with pearl and everything.
[E] He said, I want you to [F] have it.
And I said, [Db] oh wow, man, [F] that's your favorite guitar.
You know, that's what you [E] played on the Balmoral [A] Olympics.
He says, [G] I know.
I said, I'm not [Gb] going to live.
I said, I'm going to [B] die next week.
I said, [Ab] why?
He says, [Eb] I'm going to visit all my close friends this week and all my relatives [A] in Texas.
He said, I [G] know that a drunk's going to kill [Eb] him.
I said, I've really [F] got a strong premonition.
[C] And I said, I know it's so.
And he always was very spiritual.
I said, he knew.
And [Gm] next week, a college student at a [G] college station in Texas, [Gb] drunk in a pickup truck,
over Milano [C] Junction, there was an overpass there, and he [E] hit him head on.
Before he died that week, he told me, he says, I'll get back to you.
He said, if I [Bb] die, I'll come back [E] and let you [Eb] know that there's life beyond the grave.
[F] I [Bb]
said, that's like a [B] code, like the Houdini code, [Bb] you know.
Are you familiar with the Houdini code?
He [F] left a message with his wife [E] that anybody could [A] prove [F] that he can't,
that came [Db] back from the dead, that his wife [Dm] had given $10,000.
So he said, let me give [Eb] you a message.
And he wrote it down and I had it.
And one day [Gm] in 1966, this [Fm] was six years after his death, I had a letter.
[Eb]
New York City, from Grange Village.
And it says, we are a group [F] of spiritualists who meet every [Bb] Thursday and we had a seance.
And we have been in contact with a [G] spirit by the name of Johnny Horton.
And we did [F] not know who Johnny Horton was.
[A] And this was the first time we ever had a [F] contact with a spirit [Bb] that [B] gave us his full [F] name
and also somebody who [E] wanted the message to be delivered to, [Bb] Muriel Kilgore.
And not being [Eb] familiar with country music, we did not know either [Ab] of the names,
who Johnny Horton was or [E] Muriel Kilgore.
[Ebm] And so one day we were waiting for our [Bb] seance, which took place at like 9 o'clock or [C] something.
And we were listening to the Met's radio station [Gb] and the game was rang [C] out.
And in the course of [D] the game, Bob
[Am] Lankwood [A] came over here and said,
play [Ab] [Gm] some country music records [G] and I'm going to play one by my old buddy Muriel Kilgore.
I just came back and spent a week.
And the group then called [D] him and got my address and they wrote me this letter.
[E] And they said, Johnny Horton, we've been in contact with him a year.
And he says to give you a [Ab] message and you'll understand the [G] meaning of it.
And [Eb] the message is, the drummer is a rummer and cannot hold the beat.
And that was the message he gave me.
[Em] The reason he said that is Johnny [E] hated musicians that drank, you see.
The [Cm] drummer is a rummer.
