Nels Cline Plays His '60 Fender Jazzmaster (solo) chords
Start Jamming...
Well, I was [Em] attracted to the [B] Jazzmaster late in life.
When I was in high school, a [Gm] friend of mine had one, and [G] nobody thought this was a cool guitar, [A#] including me.
It wasn't until I heard [F#] Marquee Moon by Television that I started to become [B] intrigued with the Fender Jazzmaster.
[G] But not enough to [Bm] go get one.
In fact, it wasn't until I heard Sonic [A#] Youth in the early 80s that I decided [Gm] I needed to [G] get something with strings behind the bridge.
It was really, I think [F#m] in Thurston's case, probably not [A] a total accident, but maybe almost an accident [G] that they also looked so cool.
[Bm] I've just said [B] straight out that I pretty much play [F#] one because of him and Tom Verlaine.
And then I recorded with Mike [C#] Watt on the Ball Hog or Tugboat [B] record on my Jaguar
and [B]
realized that it wasn't really cutting [G#] it for full-on, like, balls-out [B] rock that I was going to be doing while on tour.
[G] And Joe Biza showed up at my old concert series [A] playing this [G] Jazzmaster,
and I thought he had switched from his normal [B] strat and gotten this Jazzmaster, and I was freaking out.
[F#] I said, Joe, where did you get that guitar?
[G] He said, oh, it's Watt's.
He loaned it to me while my strat's being [Bm] refretted.
I said, what?
Watt [B] has a [A#] black Jazzmaster?
[B] And so he [E] said, yeah, yeah, well, you know, I'm going to be giving it [F] back to him.
[E] So I actually asked Watt if I could borrow [A] it for the tour we were going to [Bm] start in summer of 95.
And he said, I don't need this guitar.
You [Gm] should just buy it when the tour is over.
Because I didn't have any money, and so I did buy it when the tour was over.
I remember wincing slightly at the price.
It was $800.
And it's a [F#] 59.
I didn't know it was such a good Jazzmaster.
[B] I used to think of it as my [G] rock guitar, so I used to just throw it around.
The drummer and the Geraldine Fibbers, when I was playing with them,
Kevin would rip the strings off on some nights and bash it with drumsticks.
[Gm] I was irreverent, to say the least, towards [D] it.
And it wasn't [Bm] until I started [B] investigating other Jazzmasters that I realized it's a very good sounding one.
It's a good year, [Bm] etc.,
etc.
I love the sound of it.
Just playing it just now, it should feel good.
