Old Time Banjo Styles by Mike Seeger chords

[E] Hi,
[F]
I'm Mike Seeger, and we're going to have a session here in old-time banjo music.
That's the kind of music that was popular in the southern mountains from, oh, let's
say the early 1800s on up to the present.
The most popular of the styles, of the old-time styles, is what we call claw hammer.
It's also called rapping, and frailing, framing, beating, knocking.
And it's where you beat down on the string with your first finger on the downbeat, and
then on the offbeat on the outside string, usually the first string, and then snagging
the fifth string.
[D]
Now, [G] you can do that frailing sound another way.
[D] The way I used to do it, I picked up [Eb] with the index or middle finger, [D] whichever suited
me the most at whatever time I picked up the banjo.
And you can, and instead of dropping the thumb down to get the extra notes, I was always
stumbled around with that kind of, it was awkward with it, so I figured out, hey, if
I hammer on, or if I pull off, [Bm]
pull off the [A] notes with the left [B] hand, you get exactly
the [D] same effect.
