So a few years ago, 2004, I went on the longest hike of my life.
It's a thousand kilometers, three friends, and we walked the Camino de Santiago,
which is a pilgrim trail that goes through France and Spain.
And when you walk a thousand kilometers, you take the bare essentials,
because every gram counts.
So I had the bare minimum of clothes, a violin, a portable recording studio,
so the bare essentials.
And I played in churches along the way.
Peter, Peter Kaufman, was more of a fool than me,
and he had the full nine yards of camera equipment,
and then we were both packed down and ready for this trip.
And I got to play in 25 churches, and out of it came an album called Camino.
And I'd like to play one of those tunes now.
[C] [F#]
[C]
[F#] I went [Em] to walk.
[C] I didn't go to record an album.
But [F#m] I thought, what [Em] an amazing opportunity.
[C] [G] [F] And [B] managed to [E] play in 25 churches.
[Em]
[Am] Now some of those I got [F#] kicked out of.
[Am] [Em]
[C] There was one I got kicked out of after 33 seconds of playing.
Two sweeping [F#] lines [E] and, out!
You need a [G] signed letter from the archbishop.
Out!
And it was an unusual experience because the playing was very front-end loaded,
because I never knew if I was [Em] going to be able to play for [G]
45 seconds or an hour.
So [D] I couldn't say, well, I'm going to just warm up and then play what I really want to play.
[G] If I wanted to play something, I thought, well, [C] maybe I'll get to play one tune,
so let me really [G] go for it, you know, and [Em] I'd have to just [G] put heart and soul into it.
[D]
[Em] [G]
[C]
[D] [G] [Em] [G]
[C] [D]
[G] [Em]
So [D] [C] [G]
[D]
[Em] [G]
this whole album [D] is really an album of duets,
and it's an album of duets between violin [G] and buildings.
[C]
[Em] Each building had its own signature [G] reverb and its own signature decay time and sound,
and the sonics were so [D] different in the different buildings.
[Em] And [Bm] also, as I turned around, I had a stereo [C] microphone set up,
and as I turned around, the sound would kind of swirl around,
so it was [D] sonically unusual and [Em] quite beautiful.
[G] [C] [Am] [D]
