Have you ever used the phrase, don't you know who I am?
Yes, I use it every single morning when I see my wife.
Okay.
[G] Can I ask what she says in return?
No, I don't know who you are.
Please get out of my bedroom.
She's like the Queen.
[N] Have you ever stolen anything from a hotel?
[Eb] Have I ever stolen anything?
Yes, I have stolen those electronic connectors.
Sometimes when I forget my international [Gm] converter thing, I have stolen those.
I readily [Eb] admit.
Was there any comeback?
No.
You obviously travel large.
When was the last time you met someone famous who you were like, oh, quite a figure of act?
Just this past Saturday, I was in Ottawa, Canada, [A] the capital of Canada.
[G] And we were receiving [Eb]
what's called the Governor General's Performing [N] Arts Award.
And it was a wonderful event, and it was this gala.
And one of the surprise guests that night was Pete Townshend, who had come in to perform with Des McAnuff,
who also won an arts award that evening.
And after the gig, we were invited to go down to Pete's dressing room and meet him.
And I'd never met him.
And Pete Townshend is one of my real, real heroes.
I can honestly say I wouldn't be sitting here talking to you if he had not written those great songs.
They just inspired me to want to be the best writer I could be.
And so meeting him was, I was a bit awestruck.
And he was great, easy to talk to.
But in the back of my mind, I was going, holy [Bb] crap, I'm meeting Pete Townshend.
Did you get to sign your copy of Live at Leeds?
[Dm] No, I didn't.
No.
[Bb] Missed that one.
Have you ever walked out of a gig?
Walked out of a gig?
Yeah, ever left a gig early?
I mean, if you watched a band and thought, I'm [N] off.
Oh, another band.
Yes, yes, another thing is that [Bbm] you walked off stage halfway through 2112.
Oh, okay.
If I ever walked out [N] of a gig, yes.
I went to see a strange double bill.
Genesis was opening for Lou Reed.
Ooh.
[Gb] Yeah, and it was Genesis' first time in Toronto.
And they started with Watcher of the Skies.
And they were great, I mean.
And then Lou Reed started playing afterwards.
And, you know, you like Genesis, not so much [Dm] Lou Reed [D] at that period.
Nothing against Lou Reed, [Bb] but it just wasn't an act he could follow.
So, he left.
He left.
Fair enough.
[G] You enjoyed [Dbm] Watcher of the Skies?
I sure did, yeah.
Absolutely.
[Cm] Who was the last member of your band [Ab] to [D] buy a drink at the bar?
[N] The last member?
Who would be [Bbm] the most reluctant member of Lush to put his hand in his pocket to buy a drink?
Oh, none of us.
We're always at the bar.
[Bb] I know, I've been out with you.
And quite generously [Bbm] so.
That is true.
Okay.
[N] None of our guys have that problem.
No, I know.
Quite the opposite, in fact.
It might be a problem.
What's the one thing you'd save if your house was on fire?
My dogs.
Yeah.
And then?
[Gb] [Eb] Then maybe the family.
[Gm]
[Eb] What about the baseballs?
[Bbm] Oh, they'd be dead.
Too many.
That would be a problem.
Is there something [N] inanimate that you would save?
Inanimate?
I'm saying not a human being or a dog.
I don't know.
I don't.
Yeah, I love things.
I love collecting things, but they don't mean that much to me.
Yeah, you definitely don't.
But in the end, I'd let them burn.
And this answer could go on for hours.
What's your worst fashion faux pas?
There are so many, Phil.
I don't know where to begin.
Kimonos?
Kimonos were a faux pas, but I think the very worst one was for a while I had this hairdo,
[C] where I had my hair in a ponytail, yet I had this old [Eb] puffy.
And every time I see it, I want to hurl.
What year was that, Colin?
That was the [N] year I think Alex was thinking he was going to dress like Simon Le Bon.
He had this kind of groovy new wave hair, and I had this what looked like a raccoon hat [Bb] on my head.
[C] Nice.
Good times.
It was a bad decision.
I think we have a photo of that in the [N] fan club.
Is there one song by your band that you wish you'd never recorded?
Or didn't come out the way you wanted?
There's quite a few, I think.
[Eb] Oh, really?
Couldn't [Bbm] you name one?
How about Taishan?
China Spoke to Me?
[N]
Often quoted by Alex and myself as our least favourite brush song.
Can [Ebm] I ask why?
It just seems like an error.
It seems like it was a personal thing for Neil.
And it just doesn't work for me in hindsight.
We'll be doing that live on the next tour then.
No.
I'm [N] always waiting for Taishan.
We'll be waiting quite a long time.
Is it the last song on the album as well?
On Hold Your Fire?
Well, obviously not, because you've banished it from your mind.
What was the last song you listened to on your iPod or your MP3 player or whatever?
What was the last song you listened to?
Um, the last song I listened to
What was his name again?
I think it was Chet Baker.
Trumpet album.
Where he's not a trumpeter.
No, he's not a singer.
But he had kind of a cool voice.
Yeah.
Like Alex.
Cooler than Alex.
I do like Chet Baker very much.
[Bbm] And finally, what, if anything, do you [Eb] sing in the shower?
I [Bb] never sing in the shower.
Do you not?
Very busy in the shower.
[Gb] They're going to not know what we're doing.
Yes, I use it every single morning when I see my wife.
Okay.
[G] Can I ask what she says in return?
No, I don't know who you are.
