Hey John, sorry this is a bit late mate.
late Christmas present.
and yeah, it's a surprisingly tricky song, but yeah.
simplified it a lot.
do your normal C, but put your pinky on that third fret.
So instead of, it's gonna sound like this.
and then [C] also
[Eb] and this finger.

_ _ Hey John, sorry this is a bit late mate.
Consider this a late Christmas present.
Apologies I didn't get it to you in December when I said I was going to.
I just ran out of time and yeah, it's a surprisingly tricky song, but yeah.
I've simplified it a lot.
So the main thing is you've got your C, but in the verse
do your normal C, but put your pinky on that third fret. _
So instead of, it's gonna sound like this.
So there's that and then [C] also
that [Fm] makes an easy change.
So we're just leaving these two fingers, this finger [Eb] and this finger.
And these two fingers are the only things [F] that move in the verse when we go from that C
[C] to that Jesus [F] four.
Everything _ [C] _ _
[F] _ _ else, yeah, it's pretty simple.
And I also did it with just this particular acoustic
[Ab] version, this acoustic live version because it's
closer to the actual tuning.
The version that he recorded whenever it was in the
70s or whatever, 80s, is a bit detuned.
So you'll struggle to sync up with it, but
_ yeah, here we go.
I'll play along to the tune. _ _ _ _
[G] _ _ [F] _ _ [C] _ _ [F] _ _
[C] _ _ _ [C] _ _ Here's the intro.
Just keeping [F] that pinky on. _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ [C] _ _ [F] _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ [C] _ _
[F] _ _ _ _ [Bb] _ _ _ _
_ I'm [F] trying to reach the future through the past.
I'm [Bb] trying to carve tomorrow from a tombstone.
_ [F] But all he knows is this woman that I love.
_ [Bb] _ _ _ _
We've [F] had too much and I've been through it. _ _
Right now I only [C] wanna be here with you.
[Dm] Till the morning is [F] long. _ _ _
I wanna take you [Bb] to the island. _
I'd trace your footprints in [F] the sand. _ _ _
I wouldn't believe it [C] when the sun goes down. _
[Dm] We'll make love, [C] sun, [F] _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ and rain.
Buyers over by the markets.
_ _ Whitewash slogans on shipyard walls.
_ Hitchcocks [C] praying for a mighty [F] showdown.
_ [C] No [F] way out, all [C] is light, we're gonna [F] fall.
_ _ _ [Bb] It's up here we sacrifice our children.
We've had to [F] sleep them.
More than our dreams from yesterday.
_ _ _ [Bb] _ Dying will lead us into glory.
_ [F] But hey, don't listen to them.
This woman that I love.
We've [Bb] had too much and I've been through it.
I've sung too much and I've been through [F] it. _ _ _
Right now I only wanna be here with you.
[Dm] Till the morning [C] is [F] long. _ _ _
I wanna take you [Bb] to the island. _
I'd trace your footprints in the [F] sand. _ _
I wouldn't believe it when [C] the sun goes down. _
[Dm] We'll make love, [C] sun.

_ _ [G] _ _ [F] _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ [Bb] _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ [F] I love you.
I love you too.
[C] Playing folks, don't see all this [F] glory.
_ [C] High [F] school, we [C] used to love,
just [F] dropping out.
_ [C] And I know, young boys dying in [F] the ditches.
_ [C] _ _ [F] Being [C] free, it's [F] all about.
_ _ Havoc, [Bb] twisted wreckage, down on Main Street.
_ You'll bring us all together in the heat.
_ As we go, marching down the road to freedom. _ _ _ _
_ _ Freedom.
