[Am] [D] [Am] You've been in the public eye now for I mean 60 years.
Yeah
What's the most common misconception about you?
I don't know
You're saying you don't Google yourself every morning
I've never googled myself.
No, I don't want to know I think you know in the beginning
in the beginning
The people said people would say he's he's arrogant
But I don't think so I Was
You know, I was reticent a little bit shy
You know, I don't know since I was a little kid.
I
Would use I used to go to I used to go to
The store a candy store to buy comics when I was a kid the candy store owner would say what's wrong
People used to say to me all the time what's wrong?
[N]
And I would think
Why are they asking me what's wrong?
You know, there's nothing there's nothing wrong
But evidently there's an expression on my face.
That looks like something's wrong
So, you know, maybe there's some level of I don't know maybe there's some level of sadness You know
That's in there
But I don't know I don't know what people think of me
You know now I really don't you know, I mean they seem to like me nothing you you
You
Went this summer you went to the Democratic Convention and you played a song there you played bridge of a troubled water, right?
That was a very special moment
Did you I mean, why did you choose that song?
It's not well a political song
Not it not usually but in that context it was
What happened was I gave Bernie [C#] Sanders [N] one of my songs to use in his campaign America
And it was a very effective
ad for him and I did that because
Well, like he's he's a guy who's like about my age.
He comes from New York
His opinions he voted against the war
He was
Very concerned with the ecology so
When he asked for the song I said, yeah sure hats off to you
I agree with you.
I agree with a lot of what you say sure you can use it fine
Then it became apparent down the line months later that he was going to lose
And he wanted to use the song again
In one of his campaigns and I said no you can't you can't use it and partly it was because
probably justifiably so he was very angry at the Democratic Party and
And I guess at Hillary and I think I think he felt that he wasn't
Playing on an even playing field and in fact, it was proven that that was the case
But I felt that the country had become and is addicted to
anger the media are the pushers and
Trump is a particular
guy who encourages
Anger and for me when it became apparent that Bernie wasn't going to win.
I thought
Given that there was an enormous
Attraction to his thinking by young people he should set an example of not being angry
Because while the anger was quite often justifiable
it's a very poor way of
Making a decision you want to make it an important decision in a calm
State not a state of anger, even though you may be absolutely justified in your anger
So I took the song away then
The Clinton people asked me to sing at the convention and they said we want you to sing
America which was the song that I'd given to Bernie, but I said it, you know
For a 30-second spot, that's a great song
But if I have to sing the whole song that's three minutes
there's all of these verses about he's on the bus and the
Kathy said I said and the bow tie is really a camera that have nothing to do with
politics and I do you know to sing this to a
Convention Hall of people who are just talking is just not going to work
And anyway, the point of this is that there should be bridges
made so that
The party can unite and in fact
We need bridges so that the country can unite and you can take that metaphor and take it to the take it to the world
Here's a point that I tried to make and I don't think I don't think it's been absorbed
politics uses music
When they ask musicians to come periodically to raise money to sing at a can the convention
I can tell you this it was no fun to sing at the Democratic Convention
I had a pool.
I had a reason to go there, but the mic system wasn't right
The organ broke right before I went on there was a key part of the song
Half the people are talking half the people are singing along
It was hard to hear the piano was completely different from sound.
It was not a funny and that's the way it always is
When you when you when the artists are used by the politicians
Okay, that's well enough
But after the politicians get into office do they seek the wisdom of the artists?
No, they don't they don't it's as if you're you're smart enough to sing or you're smart enough to
read or perform
But your thoughts about society and the world or the coat country
Even beyond culture are insignificant
