I'm Charlie Smith and this is a piano lesson for Purple Rain by Prince.
It's in the key of Bb [E] major and [D] we use four [Bb] chords to play the song.
The first chord is Bbsus2.
[Gm] The second chord is Gm11.
Notice that it's the [G] same notes in the right hand as [Gm] the Bbsus2.
[F] The third chord is F major.
[Eb]
And the fourth chord is Eb major.
Those four chords in a row make up the intro, the solo section, and the outro.
[G] I'm playing the chords in a quarter note rhythm to show that each chord lasts for [F] four beats,
or one bar.
[Eb]
[F] The verse is an eight bar progression that starts with the same chords as the intro.
There's a break at the end that leads to the chorus.
[G]
[F]
[Eb]
[F] We repeat the first three chords, then hold the F [G] major for an extra two beats, leading
to the break into the chorus.
[Eb] The chorus uses the same chords as the previous two sections in a different arrangement.
At the end, we hang on the F major and break just like we did in the verse.
The chord I changed to there was an Ebsus4.
[G]
[F]
We hang on the F major for a total of three bars.
There are the three different sections of Purple Rain.
