Quinn XCII Explains His Stage Name | Fuse chords
Start Jamming...
A ton of people get my name wrong, which is totally fine, because I don't make it easy on people, for sure.
[Am] Quinn [E] comes from, it's an acronym actually I got from [G] college.
A professor of mine was using it.
It stands for quit unless your instincts are never neglected.
So just like pursue anything you love, if you have nothing inside telling you to stop it.
And at the time I was going by Mike T, which is my real name is Mike and last name starts with a T,
so I figured I'd need to switch it up a bit.
So, chose Quinn for a little bit and then we ran into some trademark issues,
so I attached the XCII on top, which is the Roman numeral for 92, which is the year I was born.
And that's how you get Quinn 92.
[Dm] My sound's a blend of a [C] lot of genres.
I grew up listening to a lot of Motown [Gm] music growing up,
so guys like Michael [Dm] Jackson, Sam Cooke, and then there's new [C] school people that I was [G] really big fans of,
like Kid Cudi and Kanye West.
So I really just blend a lot of reggae with soul, with hip-hop, with a little bit of electronic music.
It's pop music, but it's just like a melting pot of a lot of different genres.
[Eb]
In order to create a [Cm] song, I start with just a simple melody in my [C] head.
I play that and I'll build little lyrics off of it, I'll jot down words I like,
[Fm] and I kind of just match [Gm] the two together and it's very step-by-step.
And it doesn't come together in one second, it's a time, it's a process.
[Gbm] Deep down I knew [D] my real passion was music, and so I always knew I was going to take a crack at it.
The idea of a hobby turning into a job became more real.
The decision to sign was one that we had kind of mulled over for a while,
but I think when we met with Columbia, something clicked in the sense that they really understood our vision
and just wanted to kind of take it to the next level and put us on a bigger platform.
Honestly, it sounds cliché, but there's so many things that happen each day that I'm like,
wow, this is crazy, this is awesome.
[Ebm] [N] The new album, Coming Before the Fall, is about halfway done now.
I'm excited to show the fans this new project because it's a blend of past music,
so the Day One fans will get a sense of, oh, okay, this is Quinn's stuff, he's been doing it forever now.
But I also am kind [Ab] of incorporating some new producers and writers that give it a little bit of a 2.0. flair, and they can see progression but also see the roots are still intact in the [Ebm] songs. [Bb] [N]
